I was reading this book once that had artist's renderings of aliens from various sci-fi stories and books. It would also have a brief description of the creature and what story they were from and the authors that wrote about them. Some of the aliens mentioned in the book were the aliens from A Wrinkle in Time. And the alien from the story that the movie The Thing was based on.
Anyway, while discussing in another thread about aliens that were very different from humanoids got me thinking about that book and one of the descriptions that was in it. I was wondering if the following description sounded like anything that any of you has read before. And if you knew the title and author of said story or book.
The aliens described had a cavity at the bottom of their body which held a ball (it was biological, part of them) that they used to get around with by rolling on the ground. At the end of their long necks they had a smaller ball which they could squeak on a surface to make sounds which was how they communicated with each other. They didn't really have a head or extremities.
