Looking For Fun PS2 Games

If you are looking for interesting RPGs i can't reccomend the Shadow Hearts Trilogy enough, a bit dark but quirky...

Shadow Hearts
Shadow Hearts : From The New World
Shadow Hearts Covenant

and a great platformer would be Vieuwtifull Joe 2

The Onimusha series is a great hack-n-slash series set in fuedal Japan filled with demons and stuff.

Thanks, Rincewiend, I'll check those out! :D

I know what you mean J., my PS2 library (41) is the largest I've ever owned a the first to go over 40. My DS (26) and PS3 (32) are the second most.

It's really easy to buy tons of PS2 games if you shop in places like CEX over here. :D

I go to 99Gamers. I have saved so much money it's absurd. If I had to use regular money to buy games, I'd have been in the hundreds of dollars by now, but thanks to that site, it's only what has been required to ship games to other traders.

I picked up a few more games today, and this will be it. There is a ratio of 3 to 1 (you can only buy 3 games per 1 game you sell), and so all of the games I didn't want are now out the door.

My incoming games are:

Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4
Tekken 5
MLB 2K12
Spongebob Squarepants: The Movie

I don't do fighting games much, but I saw Tekken 5 and I had to have it. I'm also a huge baseball fan, and owning 2K6 has been great, but I saw 2K12 for only a handful of coins, and since I had more than enough, I grabbed it too. The others I got in straight up 1 to 1 trades.

Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies
Oooooh, yeah, I had that one too. Really fun, arcade-y flight "sim". Been playing these games since the original Air Combat* on PSX.

*(Ace Combat in Japan)

Yeah, it's pretty fun. I'm a more realistic flight sim type, but I can't argue with guided missiles and barrel rolls. :lol:

It also looks like a couple of the games I bought were canceled. That's the downside to just regular people shipping to other regular people. Sometimes they don't care to follow through. Once I got my coins back, I ended up getting Bujingai: The Forsaken City, which just looks awesome, and Madden 2012. I'm not normally a football guy, but the gameplay and graphics look terrific, so I'm willing to take a chance on it.

On an "apparently I'm old" note, I was talking to a guy today, he just graduated high school, and I mentioned the PS2 (it's my favorite system right behind the Super Nintendo), and he just up and says "PS2 graphics are shitty. How can you stand to even look at that crap, man? The screen's all fuzzy and shit."

Are the graphics really that bad to the current generation? I mean, yes, they're based on a 14 year old game engine, but I think they look great! The only thing that harms them, IMO, are that they were made for standard definition TVs, as HDTVs weren't prolific enough at the time. Quite frankly, I think, in a few small ways, PS2 graphics can hold their own with some more modern games. Just my opinion, but to call them shit? Yeah, my eye was twitching on that one. :lol:

I too have enjoyed the Ace Combat games ever since Air Combat on original PlayStation. I was miffed when Xbox 360 got the only version of an Air Combat game that came packaged with a flightstick/thruster module....why didn't the PS3 get that kind of love when Ace Combat was largely featured on PlayStation consoles? But, I bought the 360 version for that reason.

As for why PS2 might look bad today....well, it's highest resolution was 480p....which would be the best resolution for DVD players. 480p was the start of progressive scan for DVD's and prog-scan capable tv's, but it is still standard definition.

The PS3 has a feature on it that will smooth out some of the standard definition PS1/2 games, and perhaps even try to upscale them a little bit for HDTVs. . It works for some older games, but not all. I remembered playing the original Warhawk (PS1) on my PS3, and it looked like an adavanced Atari 2600's graphics on the PS3. (an exaggeration I've made, to be sure, but not far from the visual truth :) )

Given how far along computer graphics and definition in television have come in years, it's understandable for some folks to balk at the older generation consoles....but a lot of times, it's not about the graphics, but the gameplay. :)

If you like tactical RPGs, try to get Soul Nomad. It's made by the same folks who did Ogre Battle, and is (sort of) similar.

Well, to be fair, even if we ignore the SD to HD comparison*, 3D graphics just age much worse than 2D. Just look at early games on PSX or N64 today, they're much harder to tolerate for most people than, say, a SNES game. Same goes for PS2/Xbox games, to a slightly lesser degree.

*(which is a huge deal to younger folk like the highschool graduate you talked to, who for the most part grew up with HD gfx)

The Spyro games are cute and fun.

The Simpsons: Hit & Run is a GTA-style game but with the Simpsons and minus the violence.

There's also Wallace and Gromit: Project Zoo, which is pretty cute.

Let's not forget the classic, Katamari Damacy.

Also try:

* Psychonauts
* Ico
* Everblue 2
* Gitaroo Man
* Space Channel 5

A great game that isn't bloody or nasty is that I liked a lot is Warship Gunner 2, set in a alternate WWII in which the enemy isn't Germany, but a different country (trust me, it gets weirder from there.)

The Adventures of Cookie and Cream is a really cute and colourful co-op puzzle/platformer. I wouldn't recommend playing the game solo, but if you're looking for a game to play with a friend this is it.

Kingdom Hearts arrived in the mail today. I've played it for 20 minutes. I love it. :adore:

I love it. I was pulled right in, and I don't care what that kid said, the opening sequence of Kingdom Hearts is just gorgeous.

Yeah, I'd imagine Kingdom Hearts' artstyle to hold up pretty well. I remember really enjoying running around in the main hub, the world just has a ton of charm.

There was some support for 1080i and widescreen if you have the right cables.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_2_games_with_HD_support

Ah...very cool. :). Yeah, if you had component cables (red,white,red,green, blue) I imagine the slim model PS2 would've possibly supported 1080i, which indeed is not a resolution to sneeze at. :)

Good find. . I can see though that in reading that report that 1080i support was extremely limited. :)

I have the component adapter for my PS2, and it makes a big difference. Until then I was using the composites, and the quality was okay, but middling at best. Once I hooked up the component cable, everything was sharp and clear, the colors were bright and popping.
