looking for a certain type of firewall

I'm after a software firewall that will actually ask me "this program is trying to access the internet. I'm freezing it until you tell me whether or not you want it to do that" (like zonealarm 5 used to - would pop up when a new program was run and ask that before letting it go any further). Windows firewall and all these others don't seem to cut it, they just seem to say "I've let this access the internet because I think it's safe, do you still want to allow it?". Does anyone remember the type of firewall that would halt the program until you decided? Any recommendations?

Get a hardware firewall and only open the specific ports trusted programs need. Software firewalls are too easily circumvented.

I am not sure that there is a firewall program that refers to itself in the first person, but if there is I too am interested.

It's horribly inefficient these days and people have experienced more trouble than worth with it's later versions.

A hardware firewall is a much better solution.
