Long delayed Red Sonja movie being released in August.

After three years on a shelf it's finally coming out on August 15th and then digitally on the 29th.

Feels very much like a contractual obligation release and will probably end up in as many cinemas as the no-budget Hellboy movie from last year did.

You know, I was really rooting for this movie to be good, I really hoped this would be a movie worthy of the character. Those promo images from last year had me really hopeful.

And then I watched that trailer.

Fucking hell.

Listen, if this were the trailer for a series on The CW, I'd be like, okay, fine, might be fun. But this is the movie we've been promised for years.

And to think, if things had played out differently, we could have had a Robert Rodriguez-helmed adaptation starring in-her-prime Rose McGowan over a decade ago.

Okay, maybe the movie itself might be alright on its own merits, I'm sure the people who worked on it worked really hard to make the best out of what they were given, and maybe the result will be actually entertaining.
But that trailer is dogshit.

I'm usually pretty easy to please and even I think that looks bad.
And as someone who has developed a little bit of familiarity with the character after reading two or three volumes of Gail Simone's run, I'm really disappointed, there's a ton of potential in the character and her world, but this does not even come close to that.
It seems like there might have been some decent ideas in there, but the people involved just didn't have the skill or the money to really pull it off.

Apparently the Hyperborean Age is now not the distant past but a post apocalyptic future.

There's a few bits of what look like technology in the trailer but pause it at 13 seconds and you can see a truck quite clearly.

I'll take your word for it, because I am not watching that trailer again.

But to me, it looked more like the usual faux-medieval fantasy, when the Hyborean Age should look way more ancient than that. The Jason Momoa Conan movie may not have been good, but at least they put some effort and imagination in the costume and set designs.

Also, that "self-aware" bit at the end, making fun of how the character dresses in the source material? Luke Cage was the last time that joke was funny. We get it, the chain-bikini doesn't work in live-action, move on.

okay the trailer wasnt... bad? getting the 2011 Conan vibes .. might watch it, where ever streaming it gets to, not in the theatre..

Is Bruce Campbell doing a cameo as Conan (or Ash) in this? ;)

Which trailer, guys? I saw there were two on You Tube, a 'concept' one that was a deep-fake, then one that looked like a CGI promo for a videogame.

I'd like to look at the real one, even if it is horrible.

Um, the one that's embedded in this thread that was released yesterday.

Yup.

Looks pretty bad. It's a shame, I greatly enjoyed the six novels published by Ace back in the 80s.

This doesn't seem to resemble those in the slightest.

That trailer is barely distinguishable from the trailer for any other forgettable 'sword n sorcery' action flick from the past 15 years.

It bodes...poorly

It's from the director of Solomon Kane so the bar was set low a long time ago. With two weeks between theatrical and PVOD, it'll be a select cities limited release kind of deal.

Are you sure that wasn't just a mistake that someone missed? This seems like exactly the kind of movie where something like that would happen.

People are forgetting how to make good films I think.
How do you fuck up Red Sonja of all things this fucking bad?

I know I'm tired of the formulaic redemption/attainment script I've watched some 4,000 times by now. The trick is to prove I'm wrong when I guess who will still be breathing as the credits roll. Surprise me with a good story, not something that makes me regret the choice.

Exactly. Don't hand over an IP to somebody who has zero passion for the source material.

Unfortunately I think that's what sells to the general audience.
Once a while we'll get a gem like TDK or Joker, but then it's back to formula.
