London advices

Although I do enjoy propping up the bar myself, all the closer to the bartender, and the quicker those aperol spritzers can arrive. :p
By any chance, did you visited Italy around the region of Veneto? Because it sounds like the customary aperitif habits of the place!

Wow, fantastic advices everybody! I'm treasuring them, and making good use of the links. I will definitively get an Oyster Card. The London Pass sounds really like a good deal, thank you very much, VulKhan! :techman:

I will try to go around by walk as much as possible: the best part about visiting a new city, beyond monuments, museums and such, is to stroll lazily around with your nose in the air, breathing the unique atmosphere of each. I just hope my poor knee is up to the challenge! I also plan to explore a lot of cheap ethnic eating spots around: it's not an holiday without some adventure! ;)

The boat ride to Greenwich is a also wonderful idea, I wouldn't though about it on my own, thanks you An Officer. :)

You rule, guys and girls! Mwah!

Cheap ethnic eats!!! You are going to find a lot of that in London. I have a couple of places to recommend. The first I've mentioned before; Borough Market. On a Saturday morning this is one of the best places for organic, straight from the farm, food. I once had the best egg, sausage and bacon sandwich a person with a hangover could ever wish for at Borough.

If you are feeling like wandering into a slightly less polished area of the South London then a restuarant called Axum

in Vauxhall (a good night night out if you are gay or looking for a lady of negotiable affection) is a very good. It doesn't look good on the outside or the inside but the food is something else. It's not as good as Africa in Rome (near termini) but the honey wine brewed on site is a superb way to forget a night out.

If you are up for a night out then give me a shout. I'd like to meet up with some of the London brethren who haunt this site.

What is it with guys on this board and "ladies of negotiable affection" - and what a delicate phrase! Of all the willing women in the world... Saw someone else raving about lap-dancers in the "Good Service" topic as well. Made me laugh out loud - a topic about retail staff, and waiters, suddenly venturing there, a bit jarring...

I'm sorry "ladies of negotiable affection" is stolen straight from Terry Pratchett. I've never taken the opportunity (I'm a college lecturer and couldn't afford it).

You're most welcome. ;) Enjoy your stay!

Yeah. Good call. So it's not a countrywide practice?
It is, but spritzer aperitif originated (and are definitively more usual) in the northeast of Italy.

Westminster Abbey is gorgeous, and the last time I was in town we'd arrived to late to be admitted. But on weekdays @ 5 pm there's a choral mass, and there's no charge for admission. You're taken into the Abbey and sat in the choir pews, and the sound is just incredible.

And if you want to see a surprisingly good musical, I loved Blood Brothers.

In bocca al lupo!

ETA: Here's the url for the Mass schedule.

Camden market is cool, you can buy any T-shirt, star trek/wars/bttf/super mario there. Its got a buzzing multi cultural vibe.

Ladies and gentlemen and esteemed lifeforms, I'm back! Thanks again for all the useful tips, I certainly made good use of them. :D

For those who are curious, I will post a brief summary of my impressions of London as soon as possible. However, first of all I want to borrow someone else's former signature and agree wholeheartedly.. it is magnificent. :techman:

Welcome back!

Sounds like you managed to avoid being stabbed, and had a good time.

I was actually hoping to hear a report from you, so I will stay tuned.

Yes, he managed to avoid being stabbed just long enough to go back to the US and get shot.

I'm not sure what you were hoping to accomplish with that post.

Among other things, iguana_tonante is Italian, and so would presumably be going 'back' to Italy, not the USA.

And if you were hoping to teach me a lesson about national stereotypes--well, I'm not an American either--I'm Canadian.

What's more, if you knew anything at all about me, you'd know that I'm actually a bit of an anglophile, as well as a professor of British and European history. So if you're trying to defend your country's image, you're barking up the wrong tree.

But I am beginning to remember now why I had you on Ignore at one point. Thanks for reminding me.

^Well, that's good to know. Funny, last time I told someone I had them on ignore I narrowly avoided a warning for it and that was only because I was new.
