Lol, Pop Song

First Impressions...

I've never seen Enterprise until tonight. I rented the first disc of season 2. The concept and design is awesome, T'pol is gorgeous (her boobs are way big), and the story was surprisingly compelling.

But, when I heard some Rod Stewart rip off, belting out a heartfelt number about having faith from the heart, I couldn't help but laugh uncontrollably. The theme song is absolutely horrendous. I wish DVD technology could allow you to listen to an alternate theme song.

...Its been a long road...getting from there to here... :guffaw:

I like it too and can't see why people can't stop bitching about it. Sure, tastes are different, but I think the song's lyrics are actually very appropriate as they talk about the themes of the series. I guess some people just can't have their Star Trek without an orchestral piece in the opening credits ...

I'm wasn't bitching when I saw the opening, I was laughing out loud. I didn't realize this was an old topic, but being the sore thumb that song was, I don't doubt it.

Appropriate or not, pop songs date much faster than orchestral songs. Ideally, you want these shows to "age" or "tarnish" as slowly as possible.

I'm just pointing out what a poor choice it was. In fact, they probably chose this song in spite of Trek fans to target a different audience.

I won't say it was a bad choice to pick a song with lyrics. I won't even go so far as to say that the the song's lyrics are the problem even though they are painfully literal and childish.

But hell's bells, the performance of that song, chosen by Berman, is just horrible. Either pick a different song, or pick a different arrangement with a different lead vocal. Josh Groban wannabe vocals, and squealing guitar riffs were not just dated when the show FIRST aired, it just wreaked of 'please don't think Trek is for geeks, PLEASE! we're cool, we really are!' Newsflash, cool people don't listen to Russell Watson or Rod Stewart, and didn't go see Patch Adams.

The amount of times this must have been brought up in the last six years is unbelievable :D
I did not like Faith of the Heart, but I thought Archer's theme is probably the best piece of music ever used in a Star Trek show. It's a crime it wasn't used instead.

Exactly!

Archer's theme the best piece ever in Trek? No. It would have been better than Faith of the Heart.

I suppose it speaks volumes about the song. Every person who hears it hates it.

Despite all of the orchestral blowouts in EVERY other Trek production, the image of Trek fans as the ultimate geeks (rivaled only by Star Wars fans) has persisted.

So I doubt "Faith" has had any affect on the way Trek or even ENT fans are perceived.

I don't know why everyone is so hard on this song. I liked it and thought the lyrics were appropriate for the themes of the show. And it was nice to have something different for the opening of a Trek show.

I like that they went with a pop song.

But imho, they should've used Shatners rendition of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. :D

I'm with you Hodge, I detest the theme song, it's just too over-the-top and slick for my taste. It's a shame because I do like the intro very much, it's a nice piece of work. But I hardly ever watch it because of the awful theme song. Now, In a Mirror, Darkly, that's a kickass theme song. :klingon:

Every criticism of the song so far is exactly correct. Also, they should have at least changed it in the third season, when the series was less about "Getting from here to there" and more about "Killing our enemies to save our civilization and holding on to the last shreds of our humanity while doing so."

That's not a sentiment that's represented in candy-floss hausfrau-approved fifty-cents-at-iTunes pop songs, though.

Agreed Delta1, it is particulary ridiculous to see the opening sequence involving a very, very big KABOOOOOM in "Twilight", and then that happy-go-lucky theme song kicks in.

The Season 3 episodes should have featured a Doom Metal theme dirge.

Well, I don't agree that Archer's theme was "the best piece of music ever used in Star Trek" (that honor goes to Goldsmith's opening theme for FIRST CONTACT), I do agree that it should have been used as ENTERPRISE's opening instead of that pop song.

They DID change it in the third season. They jazzed it up. What the hell for, I don't know......

They should have changed the selection*, not the arrangement or performance. Also, I made an effort to stop watching the opening credits after Broken Bow, so I never noticed any change. If I didn't notice it, I'm sure it wouldn't have made an impression on most casual viewers. So yeah, what the hell for is kind of a mystery.

I was a casual viewer of B5 when it first aired--it was scheduled sporadically in my market--and I sure as hell noticed when the third season opening credits changed! I think the opening narration in that season is what sold me on the show.

*Cue, song, piece, track, whatever.
