Living Forever

Prison is for rehabilitation and isolation from society, not simply a punishment. Simply shortening their life would neither rehabilitate nor take them off the streets.

You're right about it not taking them off the streets, but at least in the US, rehabilitation is not much of a priority. The recidivism rate alone attests to that.

It was just an off-the-cuff idea, anyway. The ability to extend life also implies the ability to shorten it, with equal precision. I'm sure there are all sorts of nasty things a person could do with that. In keeping with the criminal justice theme I mentioned before, people sentenced to, say, 400 years in prison could actually have their lives extended so they can serve out that sentence. Might be considered cruel and unusual, though. :)

I'd say we could have decent life extention well before 200 hundred years, or even as comparitively soon as 50/70 years time, and considering how coputer technology is rapidly bounding ahead we could download our conscience into a future computer system (the comnericially widely available PS3 is creepily said to be 1% as smart as a person). But I can see the obvious ethics in the few vastly outliving the many...

Eternals would be great if exploring the universe in sub light ships, just keep them entertained with VR between stars.

I'm not so sure about natural death being the ultimate end, because of NDE and very young children mentioning their supposed past lives...

What about the people in Biblical times when we had men living for anything up to a 1000 years, I think the oldest was around the 900 odd year mark. Do you think we'll ever get back to that type of longeity?

Those are just unusual exceptions in the Bible. I haven't read it in years, but it says something like the age of man is 120 years.

The uber elite dicks want to kill most of us off and they've even engraved it on places like the Georgia Guidestones. They want 90% of us dead. The big elitists are also cultists and they like to put messages all over the place. There have been a bunch of show recently that have some sort of disaster, usually a plague, that kills 90% of the people off. I am Legend and Heroes were two recent examples.

The Galaxy is immense and even if it took 1000 years to travel someplace as long as you had good recycling systems and hydroponics then you could make it if you weren't aging anymore.

Anyone know of Howard who knocks about in Hyde Park on Sundays during its 'speakers corner' he claims he has stopped aging and can live forever..

I seen and read somewhere about some genes that can affect how many times cells can devide in their lifetime. But even they said that life span for humans was more complex than just changing a few genes.

But I wonder why cells and life in general developed that "time limit" of sorts?

Cancer cells supposedly never die and can replicate as many times as they want, by lengthening telomeres in human cells the human lifespan can be increased but they also say that it greatly increases the risk of getting cancer. So trying to gain immortality infact gives you more chance of dieing.

Who wants to live forever when there is no sex beyond a certain age? Reading?
