You're right about it not taking them off the streets, but at least in the US, rehabilitation is not much of a priority. The recidivism rate alone attests to that.
It was just an off-the-cuff idea, anyway. The ability to extend life also implies the ability to shorten it, with equal precision. I'm sure there are all sorts of nasty things a person could do with that. In keeping with the criminal justice theme I mentioned before, people sentenced to, say, 400 years in prison could actually have their lives extended so they can serve out that sentence. Might be considered cruel and unusual, though.
