I happened to be on a site where this was playing in a small window and it came across better. Maybe I need to watch this series on my phone.

We noticed the anime is on Hulu in both dubbed and subtitled versions, so we may watch the subtitled version to see how the voices change the tone.
If what we see so far is representative, I think the anime did it all much better. The so-called comedic timing and action beats just seem off the mark to me. Just my subjective opinion for what little that's worth. We shall see...It was very heavy pastiche that flirted with all-out lampooning any chance it got.
Despite the veil of 'mature coolness' it wore on the outside, it was very silly at its core and never took itself seriously.
Yes, but there are some episodes that do take themselves very seriously. In particular the arc between Spike and Vicious. It was very heavy pastiche that flirted with all-out lampooning any chance it got.

Have you watched the dubbed versions before? That's how I was introduced to it many moons ago and how I think of the show. At one point back in the VHS days you had to pick and choose how you would consume it or you would have to double dip and then with all the airings on Cartoon Network/Toonami it's always dubbed. I've been curious of checking it out subtitled at some point myself as I don't think I ever watched it like that.We noticed the anime is on Hulu in both dubbed and subtitled versions, so we may watch the subtitled version to see how the voices change the tone.
