Little things that irk you

Well, if you put it THAT way...

I wonder, though: for the actual aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, does the Navy and the ship's crew refer to the ship as THE Enterprise? I know it's The Big E, but does it carry over to the full name?

In the US Navy, ships are usually referred to without any definite article. Typically, naval personnel would say, "I serve aboard Enterprise" or "He is the commander of USS Enterprise." And ships' names are usually italicized when written.

Ah, gotcha, thanks. I still prefer THE, but I also much prefer consistency, too. (also, since we're talking about fictional ships on a fantasy show, I'm going to use that as an excuse to not use italics!)

To note, I just rewatched Equinox, and the writers at least paid attention there: Voyager was always called Voyager but Equinox was always called THE Equinox, showing that the writers knew when and when not to use the article.

Anyway, speaking of Voyager, and inspired by the aforementioned Equinox, I got very sick and tired of all the "playful" ways the crew would use Trek jargon for every day language, to tease each other. "Am I going to have to call a red alert?" for flirting, and "Intruder alert..." with a sly smile when there's a surprise appearance by a friend.

One thing that always bugged me was that in the Next Generation films they could never keep the number of decks on the Enterprise-E consistent. In FC, Picard says the ship has 24 decks but later on a crew member mentions a "deck 26." Then in Nemesis, Riker goes down to deal with the Viceroy on deck 29, then chucks the guy down what appears to be a shaft descending hundreds of feet, implying that there are far more decks past 29.

How friggin hard is it to keep this stuff consistent? Honestly, they don't have continuity people for this? If so, they certainly do their job very badly.

There are many more things that irk me, but that's what immediately came to mind when I read the thread title.

edit: my Enterprise-E cross section poster clearly states the E-E has 24 decks and the illustration supports that number as well.

It bugged me that 7 of 9 never wanted to be called by her birth name. I thought she wanted to become human again. All the baby Borg they picked up later got their names back. But Erika? Nooooo! I guess the producers thought it would effect her "product recognition" with the audience.

Erika? Her name was Anika Hansen - and Seven never exactly *wanted* to become human again. The children still had memories of their lives before being assimilated, so the transition was easier for them. Seven spent practically her whole life as Seven, that's the "name" she identifies with.

Woops, Anika, right. It's been a while. Close enough. :D

are you sure she was always "Seven" ?? I assumed Borg transferred around and had frequently changing designations.

Why should Borg be transferrd around? I mean essentially they're all alike with all the same qualifications - so there's no need to transfer a drone to another ship.

OTOH, do we know how the Borg choose their designations? Is it due to their alcove location on their ship? Or due to their "duty" station? Or maybe it's due to the place where they were first assimilated...

And Seven already had that designation in "Survival Instinct" where her Borg vessel crash landed (and she therefore resumed duty on another ship once rescued), so I guess a Borg designation doesn't change around so much...

Maybe they don't have decks 4 & 13, like many Chinese hotels don't have a 4 and many Western hotels don't have a 13.

So there are physically 24 decks, but they're numbered: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6... 11, 12, 14, 15... 25, 26.

I'll risk going slightly off topic here, but I believe this still falls under the 'little things that irk you' umbrella. This is more of a behind the scenes complaint though.

I'm always bugged by actors from various Star Trek series who say that 1. they have never watched any Trek series, or 2. that they never watched any episodes of whatever series they ended up starring in.

Seriously? On the first complaint, you are hired to do a series and you can't take a day or two to investigate what the most popular episodes from TOS/TNG/DS9 etc. are and watch them to get a feel for things? Maybe watch just 2 or 3 episodes from each to see what they like about them and what they don't?? Nobody is expecting them to be well versed in the history of Trek or in Treknobabble or anything. Just do a bare bones amount of research here.

On the 2nd complaint..this is just insane. Talk about not taking your job seriously. Any good writer will re-read what he has written many times to find errors and see what he could do better. Any good painter or musician studies their works for the same reasons. How on earth are you ever supposed to improve if you don't view your own work?? Not saying they have to watch every episode or anything, but geez take some pride in your work!
