Shana Feste, the writer/director of last year's Country Strong, has come aboard Sony Pictures' adaptation of Carolyn Turgeon's Mermaid: A Twist on the Classic Tale, Variety reports.

The book, released earlier this year, re-tells "The Little Mermaid" and is officially described as follows:

When Lenia, a young mermaid princess, rescues a man from a shipwreck and carries him to shore, her selfless act is witnessed by Princess Margrethe, who is staying in a convent nearby for protection from the war her father is fighting against another kingdom. The shipwrecked young man’s name is Christopher, and in the weeks that he’s nursed back to health at the convent, he and Margrethe fall in love—but it’s not until after he leaves that Margrethe discovers he’s the prince from the kingdom her family is at war with.

Meanwhile, in the sea Lenia is suffering; she fell in love with Christopher in the moments she carried him to shore, so she makes a deal with the sea witch: in exchange for her voice and tongue she receives a potion that changes her into human form

I can't believe they are doing this.:(

Can't believe they're doing what? Making a more faithful adaptation than Disney, because that happens all the time.

It actually seems interesting. Besides which, I would have thought by now that there is an understanding that all of these classic stories will eventually be remade every few years and reinterpreted for new audiences.

Yeah, it doesn't look like they're remaking the disney movie but more like making an adaptation to the original story.

I wonder how many kids were shocked when they read the fairy tale story after seeing the Disney movie? Not quite the same happy ending eh? ;)

I'm not opposed to this at all. While I absolutely love the Disney movie, Disney did not invent the story.

The article has a picture of the book. There is also another retelling in the works from the director of "Hanna". One would assume that this is a live action project to answer Temis' question.

:guffaw: I can't believe you're whining about this. As others have pointed out its a classic story that has been told several times. Disney did not invent the Little Mermaid. What next, moaning about a new Dracula film?

Is doing an adaption, of a retelling of a Hans Christian Anderson story really a "remake"?

Why not just simply say an adaption of Carolyn Turgeon's Mermaid: A Twist on the Classic Tale

The word "remake" gets thrown around alot but mostly it seems to turn out someone is simply doing their own adaption of something, in this case a movie based on a derivative work inspired by Anderson's tale of a mermaid.

Happens a lot in art.

The Romulans and Capulets twist is fine, but, really, they're going to stick The Mermaid Title on this interpretation, so soon after the Special Edition re-Release DVD? Disney would do that to the Ariel character, I know Disney does "wrecked emotionally", but, it's always the ones you root for that are happy ever after

Oh, nevermind, I didn't read the article and assumed Disney was re-doing it, My bad, comment retracted :alienblush:

I don't get how the Romulans fit into the joke.
