Little Green Men

In LGM, Odo wasn't trying to impersonate (imcaninate?) one specific dog, just a generic dog that he could choose because it was easy.

Not just a generic dog, but a dog that belongs to the military base they're held captive on. He couldn't have chosen a Rottweiler for example, if these weren't actually held on that base.
So it must at least have been good enough to fool the soldiers used to seeing these dogs every day (but not paying too much attention to them, probably).

What would be more tricky, unless he can do smells, would be fooling the other guard dogs. I suppose he could have managed to avoid them all, but...

Odo has no sense of smell (except when he was made into a solid), but I don't recall them ever stating whether or not he could produce odors at will. [Insert fart joke here.]

Is it established that Odo mixed with other guard dogs on the base? It's been a little while since I've seen it, but I remember him just appearing where Quark, Rom, and Nog were being held. He might have only been a dog for 2 minutes on his way from the Quark's Treasure into the interogation room.

It looks like it could have been intentional(because of how conspicuous it is), but mistakes happen. Here's an example from the film Dear John. In the first picture, his rank is on correctly. Actually, everything's perfect. His tie is the perfect length. His nameplate is perfectly spaced, etc. This is how the long sleeve shirt is(was) worn underneath the jacket. In the second picture, His rank is upside down.

Here, "Ross" wears a WW2 era uniform and gets it right:

Maybe it was a mistake not found quickly enough to go back and change it.

I'm sure Odo consistently does lousy animals. It's just much harder for Paramount to create a lousy animal than it is for them to do a lousy human face... (Well, okay, perhaps Odo just gets the lice wrong. But still.)
