Lit moments that made you cheer?

I never really had much time for "Trek" novels. Then I read the first several pages of William Shatner's "The Return," where Spock visits Kirk's grave on Veridian III -- and finds that the grave is empty, Kirk's body is gone, and Kirk may still be alive.

I can't even begin to describe the thrill and sense of hope I felt -- that maybe, just maybe, Captain Kirk hadn't met his asinine end in a mediocre TV-movie after all.

As someone who loathes just about every "Trek" production after the sixth film (except DS9), that scene in "The Return" made me realize that there was life in "Star Trek" yet -- on paper, anyway.

- Ibrahim Ng

The "Don't waste time talking" scene in "Kobayashi Maru." My initial WTF reaction swiftly turned into a ROTFL one :rommie:

Pretty much the entire climax of Unity.
- Wex is actually Odo
- Kira defeating the spawnmother using the Orbs (and an assist from Sisko)
- Sisko's return
- The revelation of what really happened to the Jem'Hadar in the wormhole
- Ambassador Quark
- Picard's note to Ro
- And finally, Bajor officially entering the Federation. This felt like the one element the show had missed; after "Rapture" and the non-aggression pact with the Dominion, it really never got brought up again. Bajor finally joining the Federation really brought the entire series (TV and novels) full circle.

Unity - The most satisfying and emotional Trek novel I've ever read.

After that, and forgive my foggy memory, there was a moment in one of the DS9 Relaunch novels where Kira goes on a spacewalk outside of the station that I found very moving and gave a quiet cheer for her character. Maybe someone could help me remember when and where in the Relaunch this happened?

Intentionally vague to steer away from spoilers - And there's a moment midway through Book II of the Destiny series (thank you, thank you David Mack) involving the political maneuvering of the Federation President where I cheered on the inside. And I have to mention there's also a moment in Book I when the Federation does something for the Klingons that made me cheer.

One that hasn't been mentioned yet was in "My Enemy, My Ally" towards the end. Enterprise, Intrepid, and Bloodwing are racing back towards Federation space persued by a more powerful Romulan force that is going to catch them (and blow them out of the sky).

At the literal last second, the rest of the Federation task force that Kirk had been in charge of earlier in the book comes charging in with phasers blazing.

I remember the line "for once the United Federation of Planets dumped politics on the carpet and answered as if to a clarion call..." made me cheer!

... I don't remember either... and I'm super curious now too!!! Help!!

Federation President Nan Bacco forcing the resignation of Federation Councillor Artrin na Yel of Triex in response to finding out that he ordered someone detained by the Triexian government without charge or trial, in violation of what we would today call the writ of habeas corpus and the principles of due process of the law. As someone who has been infuriated with the very idea of the Guantanemo Bay detention facility since it was opened, I found that particularly moving.

It's from Twilight, by DRG3. Kira is forbidden from reading the sacred texts or worshipping in public, so she takes an EVA suit and goes outside to witness the wormhole opening, looking for a more direct connection to the Prophets.

OOO, thanks!! I'll go on a quest! While I'm at it, I was surprised that Kira's father remembered a time when the Cardassians and the Bajorans were at peace.

And also that Taran'atar vs Nog part... *chuckles* Poor Nog...

Not a "cheer" scense so much as a "wow that's really spiffy" kind of scene: the end of Diane Duane's My Enemy, My Ally where Kirk plants Ael's name-flag. Just thought that was really very cool. Also the bit at the end of Duane's The Wounded Sky where Kirk gets a suprise visitor in his quarters.

I'm afraid the lit moment that made me cheer which most easily comes to mind is not a Trek moment. Mine is when the Titanic sails into New York harbor in Cussler's 'Raise the Titanic'.

I learned to love reading in the third grade with Star Trek novels, so over the years there have been countless moments that have made me cheer. But on this Black Friday, as I am dealing with countless dilemmas from the last year, Mister David Mack made me cheer in the final book of his Destiny Trilogy:

so dont read below if you haven't read Destiny yet and don't want to be spoiled. :)

Near the end of the epic, Geordi goes to Jean-Luc to give him the whatfor on why they shouldn't build a Thalaron generator. His argument about it sullying the memory of Data, and Geordi's subsequent Eff You Jean Luc you should know better and trip to the bar made me cheer. I laughed outloud on my porch moments ago, in the cold and rain, when Worf and Geordi commiserated on Data, and Spot, and the future. Great stuff, what Star Trek is all about, and I thank the author for helping me through a particularly rough time.

I like the Tarakan vs the Hirogen from Destiny. Also the defense of Kitomer- which is a cheer/cry moment... cheer for having the courage to do what is needed to protect the innocent...

I preferred the Ghostbusters II version...

The end of Lost Souls definitely made me cheer.

Such an excellent ending. I won't say more to avoid spoilers, but it was great!
