Linus Torvalds said:
I'm a big believer in "technology over politics". I don't care who it comes from, as long as there are solid reasons for the code, and as long as we don't have to worry about licensing etc issues.

I may make jokes about Microsoft at times, but at the same time, I think the Microsoft hatred is a disease. I believe in open development, and that very much involves not just making the source open, but also not shutting other people and companies out.

There are 'extremists' in the free software world, but that's one major reason why I don't call what I do 'free software' any more. I don't want to be associated with the people for whom it's about exclusion and hatred."

So QFT...

Linus has always tried to stay out of the political side of things. He's not an idealist, he just wants to write good code.

He is correct of course. But the sentiment is generally the same for hardcore haters of any kind. People who pathologically hate presidents of the opposing parties, Apple haters, haters of specific NBA superstars, video game console wars, etc.

I think the Linux vs. Microsoft "war" is just as silly, petty, ad insignificant as that of Trek v. Wars. It's only perpetuated by people who don't have anything better to do.

I used both. I like both. They both have their good points and their bad points.

If I had to choose one, I'd probably pick Linux. Certainly, there are things about Windows I really don't like, but I don't let it ruin my day.

There are also business practices of Microsoft's that I don't particularly care for either. However, they are not exclusive to the company and represent a systemic problem of modern business as a whole and not the company itself.

To sit in front of one's UNIX box and sit, whine, and point fingers really doesn't solve anything. It just makes one look like infantile moron.
