Aragorn

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
A mysterious phone call from a tipster leads Det. Sam Tyler to a headless body. A severed head is delivered to the precinct at the same time, thus leading to the discovery of a series of gruesome decapitations that might involve Det. Carling's brother, Eddie.

It's... the completely unrelated prequel to last week's episode!!!

I went with Above Average - I'm glad they altered the ep to keep it in continuity since switching episodes last week. Everyone's still growing on me except Keitel. I love him as an actor, but for whatever reason his Hunt just isn't doing much for me. Guess I'm still spoiled by Glenister.

I have a feeling they swapped this out simply because it was easier to reintroduce the series with a "fun" episode.

It's dangerous though, because Crossing Jordan did the same thing and I just gave up on the show because of it.

Still, I wonder if they're going to go the same way with the UK series with the "conspiracy". It certainly seems that way, but that could be a red herring.

Yeah. He's too low-key. Glenister was charismatic, over-the-top, reactionary, thuggish, and larger then life. He does his usual calm, tough guy shtick like he does in most of his work. He's too above the fray. He's too intellectual and even tempered to capture the character. He needs to mix it up with Sam more. There's nothing wrong with Keitel's take really, I just prefer Glenister's version.

It seems they're making Ray as Sam's foil here, and making him more Gene-like. It's a different take. I think it could work, if given enough time.

As much as I ADORE John Simm, I slightly prefer Jason Omara. Simm's Sam was a forthright crusading scrapper on the edge of a nervous breakdown half the time. He was also a bit of goody two-shoes who's ability to always be right, no matter what, could be annoying if it weren't Simm playing the character.

Omara has the build and look and personality of a cop. He's also way funnier and doesn't have as much of a stick up his ass. He's also more human and flawed. I like that. Simm could be a little too perfect and a little too good at times.

One thing this version is superior to the original with is the humor. It's way funnier. Which I also like. The original could be a little to cerebral at times.

The way the ratings are going I just hope the story plays out. :(

One thing this episode highlighted for me is how much slower American shows are to develop the characters than British shows. This was what, the 9th episode? They are only just really giving us any insight into Ray and Chris now.

Those characters were human to me by the end of episode 2 in the original show. I know American shows are aiming at a much longer run, but the sheer lack of any attention paid to characters besides Sam and Gene has made it a hard slog so far. Had I not been a fan of the original I probably would have bailed by now.

Wow, I wonder what the Aries Project is. I tried to make some sense out of the symbol on that page but couldn't. Apparently Russians are involved. Anyone get a look at the guy on the phone?

And wasn't the guy that played 'El Diablo' the one who was that disembodied floating head from those old FTL Newsfeed bits on the Sci-Fi Channel? He really creeped me out, especially since his right ear appeared to be less of an ear and more of a lunar impact crater.

Also: I dunno if this means anything, but in that scene where Donovan Stamp (side note: Kevin Conway was flashing back to his character from The Lathe Of Heaven apparently  ) is being interrogated at the precinct, there isn't any of the washed-out sepia tone that characterizes most of the 1973 scenes in this show - the coloring was normal, like the 2008 scenes from the pilot. Maybe this is a coincidence.

For a second, the mystery guy on the phone looked like Jonathan Murphy. But the pre-disguised voice was of an older man.

^ I forgot already, did we actually hear that guy on the phone talking in his real voice?

And I checked - El Diablo *was* the FTL Newsfeed guy. (I hope I'm not the only one here who remembers that show  )

Phone guy talked to internal affairs guy after the interviews were over, but we never saw his face.

Re: Life on Mars: "The Dark Side of the Mook" 2/4 - Grading & Discussi

Did they ever do anything like this (the creepy phone guy, the Aries Project) in the UK version?

Re: Life on Mars: "The Dark Side of the Mook" 2/4 - Grading & Discussi

Without going into spoilers, yes. It was the focus of series 2.

Re: Life on Mars: "The Dark Side of the Mook" 2/4 - Grading & Discussi

I thought that the guy on the phone did look like Chris. I was reading the boards on ABC, and the theory is that Chris may have something to do with Sam being in '73. Who knows, but it sure is interesting to see how they are playing it out. Hopefully, they get the chance to play it out this season and so forth.

Oh..just a fangirl note..there is just something about Ray (Michael Imperioli) that is hot with that hair. Oh wow..oh and Jason O'Mara is cute, too. :)

If I were Ray, I wouldn't have given away my car like that! Especially to a brother I never planned on speaking to again.
