"Life on Mars" has been canceled.

Variety story that's been posted on a billion other sites:

ABC has decided to end "Life on Mars" after a single year -- but in an unusual move, the network will keep the show on the air through the end of its full run, reports Variety.

That will give the series a rare opportunity to sign off with a proper finale, wrapping up the series' core mystery.

Network insiders said they were fans of the show and pleased with its creative chops -- but that the ratings ultimately didn't warrant a second season. The most recent episode of "Life on Mars" averaged just a 2.0 rating/5 share among adults 18-49, as well as 5.5 million viewers.

Five more episodes of "Life on Mars" remain out of the series' 17-episode order. As previously announced, the show's Wednesday 10 p.m. slot will go to newcomer "The Unusuals" in April.

"Life on Mars" stars Jason O'Mara, Gretchen Mol, Harvey Keitel, Michael Imperioli and Jonathan Murphy.

SHIT! SHIT! SHIT SHIT SHIT!   :brickwall: :brickwall: :brickwall:

Oh well, at least we get a wrapup. Isn't that the proverbial pickle on the giant gravel sandwich. :p

About that, though: Did they say when the wrap-up would air? Is it included in the regular run of episodes, or would they have to go back and specially film it?

Guess this kind of kills all hope for a US Ashes to Ashes...

In the final episode, Sam Tyler will team up with Sam Becket and Dan Vasser to take down Dr. Who.

If there was one good thing about this, it's that. ATA is a good show, but the main character is insufferable.

I'm glad they get to finish it. That's really decent of them. It was a decent show. Not nearly as good as the original. But good. Harvey Keitel is a great actor, but his type of tough guy is not the type of tough guy Gene Hunt should be. He's very laid back and casual. Phil Glenister is over the top, snarky, and charismatic. Keitel was miscast. They needed someone with more UMPH. Someone who'd really shake it up with Sam, not let that job go to his underlings. I did like Jason O'Mara though.

It was also watered down from the original. The BBC one was as raw, gritty, and as un-PC as you can get. Think The Wire meets Quantum Leap. So it just didn't feel as honest as the original.

Ah, well if they get a chance to end it properly, I hope they do something different with the ending.

Jason O'Mara can't catch a break. He joins The Agency, they cancel it. In Justice was a midseason replacement on the weekend with no hope of succeeding. His character dies in the second episode of Band of Brothers.

Well, people managed to get Jericho renewed via the "nuts" campaign. What do I have to send to get Life on Mars a second chance?

Everyone, send a copy of Bowie's "Hunky Dory" to ABC!

I'm disappointed, but knew that it was going to happen with the numbers that the show had during it's run. I just find it frustrating that I finally found a scripted television show that I like, and now it's gone for good. As I've said in previous posts (I think I said) that I'm not a fan of reality television, especially on the national networks. I just can't stand them, and that's what they seem to always push with their advertisements.

On a happy note, at least they will play out the full order of 17 episodes. Maybe this will be on dvd sometime soon.

I wonder if Scrubs will be axed

as for the axed Life on Mars, meh you yanks can watch Ashes to Ashes

Disappointing, but not unexpected. We'll see if ABC actually airs the rest of the episodes. Eli Stone wasn't so lucky...

Actually, Life on Mars seems to be a series that would do well on a short run anyway. Can only stretch the main plot so far, before abandoning it and making it a 70s cop show anyway, so better to keep it tighter and work to a resolution...

Sad but not unexpected news.

At least ABC have the decency to let the series play out and wrap everything up. Most shows don't get that opportunity if they're cancelled.

Agreed, but a two or three year run would have been nice. I love the show and love the characters.
