License plate and bumper sticker wins and fails

I never thought I'd be defending a "beef is whats for dinner" sticker, but "coexist" doesn't mean "be PC". There's no fail here.

I have a friend who is a big Pittsburgh Steeler fan and had bumper stickers all over his car and was speeding through Cincinnati one day and a cop pulled up behind him. My friend knew he was speeding and thought he was done for then the cop accelerated and pulled next to him and my friend looked over and the cop was holding a towel with "Pittsburgh Steelers" on it. The cop then signaled to my friend to follow him, pulled in front of my friend and escorted him at a high rate of speed to the city limits.

The strangest one I ever saw, again in Austin, was a Che Guevara bumper sticker--with just his face and the slogan "Che Lives" on a red, Mercedes convertible. Seemed a tad ironic.

Yeah...I'd classify that one as a FAIL.

Everytime I see those stupid little stickers meant to represent family members I think of those as failures. Yes, you can reproduce. So?

That's not as bad as the ones where people put their kids' names on their cars. Great...give every pedophile your kids' names so they can actually get your kids to respond to them.

Unfortunately I can't prove either of these with pictures (tried but I suck at taking pictures with my phone), but I think we've all been driving down the road and seen some REALLY funny or awesome license plate or some attempt to convey a message that was in fact an epic fail.

I saw these on a recent road trip.

Ummm... So co-existing means not being able to have your own beliefs? If my best friends are Jewish and Hindu does that mean I can only eat chicken?

The point of co-existing is "I have my beliefs, you have yours. Let's live together."

It doesn't mean "You have your beliefs and I'm going to alter mine as much as possible in order to not make you feel offended because I like to eat an animal you do not."

Sorry, I don't see the hypocrisy there.

Good point. I was thinking mainly of the commentary I've heard on Christian radio, which is totally incompatible with religious tolerance.

But that's part of co-existing! I have my beliefs and you have yours and it doesn't bother me. If you see that I like to "flaunt" that I like eating an animal that you find "sickening" to eat and that enrages you then that's no co-existing! You're letting my beliefs bother you.

Some cultures like to eat dog, an animal that in my society is considered precious and not a source of food. If I visit one of those countries and I walk by a meat-store and see a special on dog meat I'm not going to be offended because I accept and realize that other culture and that it has no impact on me. and I'd probably be just as "sickened" by the idea. But it's their belief and preference.

If anything the "Beef" sticker is a test for the reader to see if he wants to co-exist. If the reader sees it and isn't bothered by it as a Hindu then they're fine with co-existing. The guy in that car likes to eat beef, I do not. That's that. But if you're bothered by that other person's preferences then you've got deeper problems. Flaunting it or not.

I saw a license plate the other night that said "MSSASSY" at first I thought the woman was flaunting some questionable physical attributes and could maybe even understand why she failed to find meaningful companionship. Then I realized it said "Ms. Sassy."

Maybe it's not so much the beliefs as the actual food itself. Some food makes ME physically sick, but it's got nothing to do with religion, just the food. Some times food just smells or looks bad.

Okay, fine. I accept and understand that, plenty of food does the same thing to me. I went out to eat with friends a couple of weeks ago and we went to restaurant with a seafood theme, I got a steak off the menu. My friends mostly got various forms of seafood which I can't stand the smell of and in some cases the sight of. Are they bad people who don't want to co-exist with me because they ate it in front of me? No. I didn't like it, I held my opinions to myself and enjoyed my meal and the company of friends.

Co-existing doesn't mean altering your behaviors to not offend others that's not co-existing that's submitting to their different beliefs and valuing them over your own. So having an "eat beef" bumper sticker on the same car as a "co-exist" bumper sticker isn't a contradiction! It's saying, "You don't believe in eating beef and that's great and I respect that. I do eat beef and enjoy it!"

It would be a contradiction if the bumper sticker said something like "If you don't eat beef you're a hippie, liberal, PUSSY!" or something like that then, yeah, there'd be a contradiction. Here, there's no contradiction.

I think the core of the situation is the difference between tolerance and intolerance. Because of my Christian beliefs, if eating pork offends someone on a personal or religious level, I would not eat it in front of them. In the old days we called that respecting the other person's beliefs (as called for in Romans 14:15 which I quoted).

If you do not have religious nor moral values which call for you to respect others' beliefs, then you are not held accountable for your intolerance. Only if you profess Christianity are you held to such standards. Therefore, Trekker4747, since I do not know your religious beliefs I cannot judge you for your intolerance.

This is not necessarily true. While this guy has definitely gone waaaaayyyy overboard, many combat veterans are proud of our service and display it on our vehicles. I have a US Navy window sticker on my car. [Yes, that is the only sticker. Although I usually have a ball cap or two on the rear dash.]
