Lexus HS

Surefire

Captain
Captain
Lexus will be introducing a new line of hybrids called the HS 250.

I suspect it will use a 2.4 liter I4 engine suplemented by an electric motor, somewhere in the vicinity of 190-200 total horsepower (gas and electric combined), while able to maintain 33-37 overall MPG.

It will likely be based on the Prius, but using the bigger Camry Hybrid engine (tuned for a few more HP than the 2.4 liter Camry gets).

While I'm NOT a fan of smaller cars, I think this has potential to be a hit if they make it feel like a Lexus (quality interior and soft freeway cruiser ride). I think people would like to have a quality near-luxury car that can get 35 MPH and still have relatively capable power.

Would anyone buy a small, 4 cylinder Lexus?

I probably would, if I had the money. But then again, I like small cars, and the vehicles currently on my "to consider whenever I have enough money for a car" are the Honda Fit, Mazda 3 and Volkswagen City Golf.

I wouldn't, but then again I need pretty big cars since I'm 6'3". Not to mention that I'm not a huge fan of the Prius (my dad has one so I'm not speaking without having tried it).

I tend to like mid to full sized cars, with V6 and V8 engines. And I really love mid sized SUVs.

However, as a second car, I could see myself buying one (depending on the price). I wouldn't pay 35k for a puddle jumping Lexus (I prefer the mid to full size Lexus), but if it was in the mid to high 20k range.... maybe.

I wouldn't get it, personally, as it's unlikely to be to any of my styling, space or performance tastes. But I can definitely see a market for this sort of car, esp. in the UK, where four-bangers are the norm.

If there was a breakthrough in technology that allowed the Lexus V6 3.5L engine to get 30 mph, it would be an easy decision.

They'll sell a butt-ton of those HS250h's. You need look no further than the Audi A3, 1-series BMW, Acura RSX, etc., to see that the compact premium market does all-right.

IMO though, Hybrids a dud compared to the current ~2.0L Euro-Diesels that are offering better real-economy of 45mpg/hwy, and better performance too. If Audi were to plop a TDI-diesel into the A3 and offer it with Quattro, I couldn't think of a better car for me personally.

Beemer diesels are pretty cool; nice and smooth and responsive. They're the kind of diesel I'd be happy buying if I had to pick a diesel.

^ Audi's 3.0TDI is pretty sweet as well. And then there's the 6.0TDI from the Q7. ;) I bet Americans would love that one.

^I like the noise of diesel... but more so in trucks like the Ram.

I would hope that the cars have enough noise deadening material to minimize it.

A RAM should have a Hemi! :( Sorry for being childish but I've never like diesels. I'm with Top Gear here, it's the Devils fuel

I love the Ram diesel. It sounds like a semi-truck, as IMO any pickup should.

But I agree, the Hemi engine is great. I just like the Cummins slightly better.
