Letterman beating Conan

What impressed me about Conan is that watching him since he started TTS...

I actually think he got better.

I really like Conan but I like Dave too.

I noticed that the jump in ratings did seem to coincide with the burst of controversy around Dave making sexual jokes about Bristol Palin and the Palins being upset. He's really milking that whole thing for what its worth, its bringing flashbacks of the old Late Night Dave who used to out of his way to create outrageous controversy.

I have mixed feelings about Conan. I think that his scripted comedy bits on the show are consistently funny. His monologues are kind of painful however. He seems to play off of the same three jokes over and over. "Oh, here's the part where he turns the uncomfortable situation back onto the audience" "Oh, here's the part where he implies something creepy about Max Weinberg" "Oh, here's the part where he makes La Bamba look uncomfortable". All three of these jokes are funny at first but he seems to do them over and over.

^Love the avatar!

Conan isn't really my cup of tea, so I've been watching Letterman more lately. I don't want Conan to fail, though! I'd hate to see The Tonight Show die off. He needs to find his groove fast.

Jimmy Fallon SUCKS.

I like Conan, but I love Dave. Dave just makes me laugh so much, and usually always at stuff he says off the top of his head and not the pre-recorded bits. You get Dave interacting with a random audience member or a kid presenting a science project and it's just comedy gold.

I know the answer to this question is probably no, given the respective differences in audience size between late night on cable and late night on one of the big three networks.

However,

I think of a good percentage of Colbert's audience as moving on to Conan's late night audience in the past. I think of the two as appealing to a similar audience, and I imagine there being some overlap. This week, Colbert is doing his USO thing which is kind of a big deal for his show. Could that be taking some of the Tonight Show's audience?

Personally, I've found Colbert to be lacking in humor lately. But his USO gig has been fantastic this week. I've been thinking of switching to Conan over Colbert for the 11:30 timeslot, but it's going to have to wait until next week.

Conan ticked up on Wednesday night (the first uptick he's had since taking over) and squeaked out a very narrow victory (a 3.2 household rating to 3.1 for Letterman).

I love Conan and Dave about equally (and fortunately in my area Dave starts a half hour earlier so I can catch the best of both), but I definitely agree that Conan still has some kinks to work out.

For one thing, his new set feels way too cold and sterile; it's not nearly as warm and inviting as Jay's old set, or the Ed Sullivan Theater. I know Conan is trying to recapture the classic feel of Carson's show, but it just doesn't fit his style at ALL.

They need to come up with something looser and more fun. If it's not "classy," so be it. I'll take a FUNNY Tonight Show over a generic but classy Tonight Show any day.

I'm not really worried about losing older viewers either. NBC would have had to replace Leno eventually, and it's doubtful the older crowd would have liked or "gotten" ANY younger comedian they would have chosen.

Crom!

I've never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it.

No one, not even you will remember if Letterman and I were good men or bad, why we fought, or why we died.

No. All that matters, is that NBC stood against CBS. That's what's important!

Battle pleases you, Crom! So grant me one request: grant me BETTER RATINGS!

And if you do not listen--then to hell with you!

^ Oh, man. Jon Stewart as late night talk show host? I don't know if I would be able to decide between him and Conan!
what are the realastic chances of that happening anwyays? feel free to use %'s

Very, very high. It's the reason Viacom keeps locking Stewart into long-term deals. I don't think there's any question that when Letterman retires, the Late Show gig is Stewart's if he wants it.

As for Ferguson, he's not doing it for the money, and he's said time and again that he's very, very grateful to Letterman (Worldwide Pants also produces the Late Late Show) for giving him an opportunity to host a show -- which is why, regrettably, he'll never jump to NBC and replace Fallon, which is something that I pray for daily.

Not a fan of Letterman. *YAWN* And I will try to catch Conan tonight, but I have to say that Leno had trouble in his first couple of years too.

I have never laughed at anything Letterman said, nothing. Guess his humor is for a different sort.

Normally I laugh at the Top Tens, but only chuckle at the rest. Unless one of either Joaquin Phoenix or Martha Stewart is present...
