Let's Discuss The 96 TV Movie

blaspheme!"

Also, an early draft of The End of Time had Cactus Woman asking the Doctor "So you're not human?" The Doctor answers "No. Well, I was, towards the end of 1999. But I got over it, like a flu."

Even though the half-human thing didn't bother me, that would have been a great bit.

As others have state, I find McGann's Doctor to be very good. I'm glad that , at least, he got to continue playing the role on audio. I have a feeling that if he had been able to continue the role on TV, he would have been my 2nd fgavorite Doctor (Pertwee being the first).

Yes, there were problems with the plot, but many Who stories have had such problems.

Eric's Master wasn't bad. I find his version much less campy than Doctor Ten's nemesis.

Too American.

I thought the Dalek/Master thing was iffy, but I sort of got the impression that these Daleks were the Daleks from just before the time war, and close to Time Lord levels of science as far as time travel goes. So the Time Lords had some kind of treaty with them, trying to contain/control them rather than wipe them off, which has only served to piss them off in the past. Of course, that leads to the Time War.

Did anyone notice that it was 2000 and the doctor warns the chinese kid to stay out of New York in 2001.

Conspiracy!

The Movie was great for its Tardis redesign, and the Doctor looked great.

Problem? Not enough Doctor in it! Too much of this movie is nonsense with Grace or over-acting with Eric Roberts. And motorcycle chases. Boooring. Give me more of the Doctor talking and acting lik the Doctor.

The opening? Absolutely amazing...until we get the shoot out in San Francisco with the gang. You know, one of those Asian gangs. My wife and I live in San Francisco and laugh our asses off at the scene. And at Grace's house. :guffaw:

RTD took the best elements of the film and made something amazing with the revived Doctor Who. Credit where credit is due: he drew greatly from the creative direction of the film. Then, he apparently went insane given the state of the Doctor Who specials and Tennant's sendoff. Judging by that cut line about being human, I'm glad he didn't just end the show with the director calling "CUT!" and everyone walking off set. Anything for a laugh, right? Over 500 regenerations and an imortal Ian and Barbera indeed!

No he doesn't. On New Year's Day 2000 the Doctor tells Chang Lee to "stay out of the city next Christmas." Next Christmas would have been Christmas 2000, and the city is presumably San Fransisco, since that's where they were at in the movie.

^ I wonder if Chang Lee was meant to die in gang-related violence the following Christmas and the Doctor told him to stay out of town to save his life. Or maybe there was going to be an earthquake or something.

I just finished watching the movie, and what he said was: "Next Christmas, take a vacation. Don't be here."

On another note, I don't know if it's because I finally have a decent copy of the movie thanks to the new release, but there were a few audio things I never noticed before, like when the Doctor is walking down the deserted hallway after leaving the morgue, he's humming Puccini. Also, when he comes across the Wild Bill costume in the locker, we hear a replay of the doctor telling the other guy what his costume is.

Watched "The Seven Year Hitch" doc last night and thought it was very good. What a chore getting the movie to the screen!

Did anyone else think the narrator of that piece sounded like Judy Dench? I was like, Why is Judy Dench, of all people, narrating a Doctor Who special? I made a point of checking the credits at the end, and of course it wasn't her, but it sure sounded like her to me.

I really enjoyed the Dr Who movie, i loved seeing McCoy again, and even with the small amount of screen time he managed to be a presence on screen, and McGann also did a brilliant job, and what about that Tardis interior....wow.

And of course a nod to Eric Roberts for his over the top Master, i really enjoyed it.

The thing that strikes me about the TV-movie is its similarity to TMP; however flawed the storytelling is, it's important because it demonstrates that the concept can "scale up" from a production standpoint, and that cheapness is not an intrinsic part of its appeal.

I thought the messed up regeneration would be a good way to explain him being half human since they might have messed up one of his hearts but then the Doctor goes around saying his was Human on his mothers side or something. Less easy to explain away. They do mention 12 regenerations. Not 7hundred something as in The Sarah Jane adventures and the movie explains how we can see the Doctor go on after 12 Regenerations. Just get a new set. Or get from another timelord.
