Let's cut bits off of babies, yes?

Nobody *enjoys* causing pain to infants, but one cannot simply discard all medical procedures just because they hurt. The benefits of vaccinations, for example, are obvious and well documented. Yet they also hurt. But we do them anyway.

Why is the USA the only advanced nation to do it if it's a matter of medical care? It's custom. Dangerous, harmful custom that isn't questioned because it's accepted as a cultural norm and myths about health benefits have settled into that culture.

I have no idea. And quite frankly, I don't much care. Even IF the US is the only nation that practices this, that doesn't automatically make it wrong.

As I said, I accept the validity of circumcision because my dad had it done to me. The fact that he IS my dad means he knows what is best for me. The fact that he is a doctor also, by itself, means that. So as far as I'm concerned, that's a double bonus. (FWIW, my actual doctor - the one that isn't my dad :D - has ALSO said that it was a valid choice. So I consider the matter settled. )

Would I have it done to my son? I honestly don't know. But since I don't have or want kids, it's irrelevant anyway.

Have you ever asked your dad why he thinks the vast majority of doctors in the world disagree with him? If one person tells me something and 3 other people tell me the opposite thing, that's when I start asking questions, not stop.

I know you've already said you don't care, but I'd be curious to know his answer if I were you.

No. Why would I want to do that? His word is good enough for me. And like I said, my own doctor agrees.

Depends on who that one person is, really.

You already know it.

I never understood why it needed to be cut off as part of a religion because didn't God create us in his image ?

and chopping off part of the penis just sounds WRONG

Geeeeeezus. I had my foreskin lopped off. I don't want it back. I think it looks fine, and I enjoy masturbation and sex. I also don't hate my parents or have any memory of it.

No wonder sites like that are necessary. It's like talking to a brick wall. A particularly smarmy one.

Perhaps next time when you want to discuss an already controversial topic reasonably you'll dial down on the hyperbole and hysterics which portray many of the parents of people on this forum as no better than Third World warlords bent on mutilating children. Then hopefully you will refrain from calling entire countries who aren't the only advanced nations where circumcision occurs and religious groups whose motivation for circumcision you're clearly not interested in ignorant. After that, maybe you'll avoid citing 19th century fears of masturbation as the justification for modern day circumcision.

Then, maybe, people can discuss this in a calm and civil manner. But probably not, since many of the participants in the issue seem to only be able to discuss from the extremes of "your parents were brutal infant mutilators who permanently damaged you even though you feel fine now" or "well, shucks, my Daddy did it decades ago when they thought it was necessary and I refuse to put any extra thought into it beyond that, but I'll still add my useless comments anyway."

To add my two cents, I was circumcised and my penis doesn't look like it just starred in one of the 'Saw' films, my parent's were in fact African warlords, I've never masturbated in my life (absolutely truthful anecdotal evidence FTW!), I like long walks at sunset and girls who make me laugh, and if I had a son I would not have him circumcised because I don't believe it's medically or hygienically necessary.

Not all pain is harm.
The difference is babies/young children can, and used to, die of the diseases they are vaccinated against.

Baby boys/little boys do not die as a result of not having a non-therapeutic circumcision.

I was circumcised as an infant and don't have any particularly strong feelings about it. I don't think my parents were monsters for permitting it--even in the early '80s it was still considered a hygienic procedure. My dick works fine and my sex life isn't lacking as far as I'm concerned.

My son is not circumcised as my wife and I did not feel it was a necessary procedure based on current medical science.

All this hand-wringing over it is pretty hilarious, though. Like we've never had a fucking circ thread here before.

Oh, you do, just not consciously. You've been suffering on the inside all these years.

Occasionally they do. I believe there are slightly above 100 such deaths a year in the USA.

The OP was so shrill I almost didn't bother posting, but since Americans are on trial here I might as well. A lot of the quotes seem irrelevant to the motivations of parents today. I might be wrong, but I'm sure most do it because of tradition or hygienic benefits. These are likely perpetuated by ignorance. I know I didn't think twice about circumcision until I saw a thread here on the BBS. I doubt people are having it done because they think it will stop their son from masturbating!

If my husband and I were to have a son, I doubt we would have him circumcised. I don't see the need for it.
