Let's be honest about the Federation's failings

Charles Phipps

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
The only difference in the Federation not helping the Romulans evacuate after Mars was they didn't cite the Prime Directive as a reason to let them die.

Prove me wrong.

I can't. ;)

The Federation Council either turned a blind eye when Starfleet Command approved of Sisko working with Garak to fool the Romulans into joining the Dominion War... or the Federation Council had no idea what Starfleet was doing.

Both look really bad from a Romulan POV.

What's really at fault is Commodore Oh infiltrating StarFleet, rising up to become the "Head of Security", causing countless damage to Utopia Planetia for her secret cult like society hidden within the "Tal Shiar".

If anything, that's one of those things that I wouldn't mind StarFleet send an agent back in time for a "Do-Over" and prevent Oh from ever infiltrating StarFleet. The amount of damage she can potentially do is INSANE, not counting the amount of damage that she did with the "Synth Uprising".

Is that right? The PD forbids intrusion into internal matters of warp-capable states and any intrusion into the matters of non warp-capable peoples. Does that mean it doesn’t apply to natural disasters affecting warp-capable states?

Anywho, the work-around is that it’s a supernova that threatens to destroy the galaxy, per Spock.

The PD forbids a lot of things, but there are always ways around it.

Heck Admiral Janeway's actions were allowed to cement into time. The Temporal Agents didn't go back in time to stop her and undo her massive temporal changes.

By the way....given the SUDDEN embrace of closed borders (within and without countries) and the embrace of the curtailing of rights.....I find the theme and motivation of Stewarts return...amusing.
Do you mean the increase in nationalism or in response to the virus?

The Federation has many events that helped create it with time travel. You can't have agents undo that sort of thing or the Temporal Agents wouldn't exist! - Pretends this makes sense.

Assuming the vaccine is created and we can put this behind us, I fully expect a Borg plague as Season 2.

It's not like Starfleet has ever had much of a screening process for their flag officers anyway. Hell, there have been at least three who have risen to the head of Starfleet itself who have plotted coups or presidential assassinations, though one of them was in an alternate timeline.

Isn't that all the more reason to implement change?

Listen, it's long been understood among fans that the only way to become an Admiral in Starfleet is to be confirmed insane and/or evil.

Poor Riker.

Also, the very act of promotion causes severe mental damage.

Case in Point: When Kirk was promoted to Admiral, he immediately lost 99% of his skill at commanding a starship with horrifying accidents every few minutes.

If they haven't felt compelled to implement change after two hundred years of corrupt flag officers including top officers who have tried to take over the government or assassinate the president, I don't see why the sudden revelation that the head of Starfleet's security division was an enemy spy is suddenly going to be a kick in the ass in that regard.

It's like Admiral Toddman on DS9 once told Sisko. "You pull a stunt like that again and we'll court-martial you. Or promote you." Coincidently enough, not long after Sisko did get his promotion to Captain.

"What he's only a Commander and he's already flagrantly action on his own initiative and disregarding and disobeying the orders of his superiors? Let's make him a Captain and start grooming him for Admiralty."

I wouldn't be surprised if Picard used this to subtly blackmail the Federation into lifting the Synth ban. Not that Picard would ever do such a thing, no sir.

The prime directive is bogus anyway they should be helping out everybody and spread the technology. Like in TNG when Data loses his memory and makes that primitive scientist lady a million times smarter.

Good April Fools Joke.

I feel the Prime Directive is a very white man's guilt view of colonialism.
