Some truck drivers, who are on the road all day, get sun tanned on the left side only. U.S, that is: I imagine that British equivalents have the opposite problem.
Racism bigotry and prejudism will always be with humanity.

Personally, I've never thought the episode was trash, just a bit obvious in the illustration of the issue.
If they had gone with -- as suggested by someone above -- a spotted pattern, it would have been much more palatable, and the crew's slow uptake on figuring it out would have been easier to stomach.
And if they had not chosen pure black and pure white as the colors. Racial, cultural and ethnic prejudice aren't all about black and white, after all.
But how is it obvious --- before you've been told it --- that the defining obvious difference marking Lokai as upper-class and Bele as slave is the orientation of their colors? Why isn't it the way they smell? Whether they're right- or left-handed? Bele's habit of never using words that start with a silent p?On the scene where Bele explains the difference between him and Loki, it's always amazed me that Spock didn't notice it immediately. After all, he's the science officer and supposed to be pretty bright. Maybe he was just having an off day.
