Have just read the first two issues of this series by John Byrne. IMO, it's another winner from Mr. Byrne. While he might not always get likenesses down more exactly, the characters are recognizably the folks we know from the series, and act the ways you'd expect them to. Also, Byrne does an excellent job of portraying the ST universe. the familar things look like they should, and the new races, ships and such he creates look like they belong in the ST universe.

The stories in this series are entertaining as well.

I just read issue # 1 and thought it was pretty good (I'm always a sucker for anything that takes places in and around the TMP period), but I'll be interested to see how well the premise sustains itself over the course of the mini-series.

I also love the TMP period. I thought the plot of the first one was a little bit basic and superficial. I prefer more involved stories told over several issues, but it was a fun ride.
