Leno's a bomb...

The whole CoCo debacle pissed me off, but I hated Leno before that anyway. I was more angry that he gets to remain on television than I was that he stole Conan's show.

I completely agree, Leno is just bad TV and NBC is run by orchids.

That's a terrible thing to say about orchids. Orchids are at least pretty to look at.

Those who run NBC don't seem to even serve THAT function.

I'm going to sign myself into a mental hospital now, I'm sure most here think it's past time.

I think I meant to say they are as dumb as ostriches.

Never saw the appeal of Leno. The people he interviews on the street are more funny than he is.

By the way, that above clip - funnier than anything Jay has done in his 18 years of hosting The Tonight Show.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. But it's okay, I'm sure Jay will take it on the chin.

NBC is going down the drain anyway. First the Conan/Jay debacle, then they cancelled Law and Order, now this. When is this network just going to fold already?!

I don't care, so long as Chuck finishes its run and ends on a positive note first.

NBC can fall into a black hole after that, for all I care.

You make it sound like this is something sudden. NBC's been declining for years. The Office and 30 Rock do okay, but they don't set the world on fire the way Friends and Frasier did. They hung onto ER too long, abused Law & Order with all those schedule changes (did they really expect it to perform this past season up against CSI Miami and Castle?), and they shitcanned good shows that needed to build an audience (Southland, Trauma), and threw money at shows that shouldn't have been made (Bionic Woman, Knight Rider).

The Conan/Jay thing is the cherry on the shit sundae, and suggests that they'd have been better off if Jeff Zucker were still booking guests and planning Matt Lauer's trips on the Today show.

The Office will lose Carell after next season so there's that. After that only "Community" and "30 rock" will keep me interested.

That's assuming Community will survive beyond next season. It's going up against The Big Bang Theory this fall.

Thats why I like Ferguson. It doen't matter who he has on. Big star or nobody, Craig is what makes the show interesting.

Craig is just awesome. (Plus he has Betty White on every few months and that makes him even more awesome.) But he and Conan have that in common. Both are just naturally funny and entertaining. On the other hand, Jay and David are way past their prime. I can't remember the last time I laughed at either one.

What makes Craig work for me, more than just him being naturally funny, is how he understands and flaunts the conventions of the late night talk show. For example, last week when he ditched the shirt and tie. He's said previously he only dresses the way he does because guys decades ago did and it's been the standard talk show host dress since then.

Hell, he even poked fun at the Late Night Show Rivalry with his "feud" with Jimmy Fallon.

Adding insult to injury, they've just announced that Conan's Tonight Show has been nominated for an Emmy in the Variety/Music/Comedy Series category (not even Letterman was nominated in that one, which surprised me because his "confession" regarding his affairs was one of the most remarkable late-night TV moments of the last decade).

Considering they often do a bit of a comedy routine around the presentation of this one, it'll be interesting to see what O'Brien does.

Back to the original point, part of me is really happy to see Leno tanking. First, it's vindication for us Conan fans who have had to put up with months of "Conan sucks" comments from Leno loyalists. Second, NBC deserves the black eye for how it handled things.

That said, I do hope this doesn't mean the end of the Tonight Show. It's been on the air since before Elvis Presley started his career, and I'd like to see it continue. But it's obvious that something needs to be done to get the viewers back. Dumping Leno wouldn't necessarily fix that. It might be time for Tonight to change its format...

Alex

PS. I just read the CNN.com nomination list and Conan's Tonight Show also picked up a Director nomination (interestingly the CNN report omits the main nomination for that category!).

One of the sad things is, Leno never wanted to go in the first place. The reason he picked Conan was to avoid the humiliating/embarrassing fight that happened between him and Letterman. It didn't help that Carson made it clear and public.. he preferred Letterman.

It was NBC's decision to replace him, not his. Not excusing his behavior, just showing how messed up NBC has been for a long long time. Leno's 10pm show was being boycotted by the other Networks who wouldn't allow their stars to appear on his show. They really felt threatened by the relatively low cost of a talk show compared to how expensive it is to produce episodic dramas. And it was NBC who talked him into that situation. Yes, Jeff Zucker has reaffirmed the "Peter Principle", someone getting promoted to their own level of incompetence.
And when evil Comcast takes them over, the viewing public is in for a world of even more disappointment.
