Lengthy win-streaks

Last Saturday Penn State Women's Volleyball notched win #100 last Saturday with a sweep of Cal for (what I think) is currently the second longest win streak in NCAA history. Win two more and they win their third NC in as many years.

From what I can find, the longest NCAA win streaks are now:
1. 137 - Miami (Fla.) men's tennis (1957-1964)
2. 100 - Penn State women's volleyball (2007-present)
3. 92 - North Carolina women's soccer (1990-1994)
4. 89 - Stanford women's tennis (2003-2007)
5. 88 - UCLA men's basketball (1971-1974)

Clearly some sports are harder than others to maintain win streaks like these, so it's a bit like comparing apples and oranges. That said, I'm surprised to see soccer and basketball with such high numbers.

That is quite the awesome achievement by PSU's women's volleyball team! I knew it had to be a long streak, but that's incredible.

All of the ones you've listed are great, though my personal favorite is the 88 game streak by UCLA's men's basketball program. I remember watching the game where it ended - a loss to Notre Dame with little-known Dwight Clay hitting the winning shot. Nobody will approach that streak ever, not with the incredible competition now present, not to mention the length in seasons, regular and tournament.

A record not on your list that is liable to stand forever, or at least a VERY long time, is in college football Div 1 (now FBS) of 47 games—1953-57 Oklahoma Sooners.

Grand Valley's football team put together a string of 40 wins in football. Granted, it's Division II, but 40 games is still a few years in football. Plus, with the playoffs in D2, the only way to win more than 15 games in a row is to win championships in consecutive years.

And the Colts just captured the record for consecutive regular season wins in the NFL at 22. Yeah, they lost in the playoffs last year, but 22 regular season wins in a row is still pretty impressive.

I read an article recently saying the the German women's luge team hasn't lost a race in over a decade.

In soccer (football) such a streak is impossible to achieve because a team just isn't that much of a favourite against the other team usually - it's probably similar to American football in that something like the Patriots did two years ago is possible although very unlikely but not much more.
In sports like that you better look at something like the longest streak of not losing a game, like Arsenal's record of 49 league games (which is hugely impressive) or most championship wins in a row - I think both Celtic and Rangers have won the Scottish title in 10 consecutive years at some time in their history (or close to that at least) or Real Madrid's 5-in-row European Cup victories (that especially is a record that will never be matched, no club has even managed to win it twice in a row since 1990).

Rulon Gardner achieved one of the most incredible individual athletic feats by ending a long-running streak. He defeated Alexander Karelin for the gold medal in wrestling, heavyweight class, in the 2000 Summer Olympics. Karelin hadn't lost a wrestling match for thirteen years, hadn't even given up a single point in six!

It's now up to 101. Championship is 8 PM on Saturday against #2 Texas - should be good!

And it was! PSU came back from down 2 sets to win in 5. The streak lives on and they're the first back-to-back-to-back champions in women's volleyball history.

Very cool! (high five)
