Legendary AF: Hellboy (2019)

Search didn't find an existent thread for this (other than that age-old "Hellboy III" thread, which doesn't really apply to this).

In April 2019, the new "Hellboy" will be released theatrically. It's a reboot, R-rated, with a script by Andrew Cosby & Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and directed by Neil Marshall, who did cult classics "Dog Soldiers", "The Descent" and "Doomsday, as well as the GoT episodes "Blackwater" and "The Watchers on the Wall".

Ron Perlman may not have returned, but in his stead, David Harbour of "Stranger Things" has donned the red make-up and horn prosthetics. He's joined by Ian McShane as Professor Bruttenholm, and Milla Jovovich as the villainous Blood Queen Nimue. Two prominent characters from the previous two movies, Liz Sherman and Abe Sapien, will not feature in the film (at least not prominently).

Don't care for the long hair look. It's just not Hellboy. And I hope they don't go overboard trying to make him a "bad ass". Otherwise, I'm excited for this. Can't get here soon enough.

This is the first I'm hearing about no Liz and Abe, but I guess leaving them out, at least for starters, is a nice way to separate this from the GTD movies. I haven't read the comics, but from what I've seen it's got a pretty big cast, so there should be plenty of other characters for them to use.

I see that Daniel Dae Kim is playing Ben Daimio - I wonder if he will acquire his "ability" during the movie or already possesses it as in the comicbook. The poster doesn't seem to show him with any very obvious scarring.

Not generally keen on reboots, especially after the F4 debacle and Spider-Man churn, but I have high hopes for this one.

I find Neil Marshall to be very hit and miss, so fingers crossed this is the former.

I must admit that I’ve enjoyed all of his stuff that I’ve seen to date, including (okay, especially) his GOT episodes.

Harbour seems a great choice to replace Perlman and Ian McShane and Daniel Dae Kim are always good value for money. I’d have loved to see a third GDT/Perlman version but I’m optimistic about this.

The trailer leaked, so they apparently decided to officially release it a day early.

This looks great. I was a little hesitant because I absolutely love the GDT movies, but this trailer has gotten rid any concerns that I had.
I'm glad they're keeping a lot of humor in it, I was afraid they were going to really dark and serious in order to be as different as possible from the GDT movies.

I hope those aren't the finished effects because at the moment it looks on the level of a SyFy TV movie.

And the Hellboy prosthetics look shockingly poor in close-up as well.

I'm really hoping the tone of the trailer isn't the tone of the movie. I'll probably check it out, but, that trailer sorta turned me off. It feels like Seth Rogan got a hold of the IP and said, "I got a hot take, ya'll."

And I hope they do some ADR, sometimes Hellboy was hard to understand, and I'm wondering if the make up made it hard to talk.

Ummmmmmm...

Hellboy (2004) cost $66 million.
Hellboy II: The Golden Army cost $85 million.

Mike Mignola said he wanted a reboot that was R-rated and closer in tone and spirit to the comics. So... he seriously made a movie that apparently feels exactly like del Toro's Hellboy for presumably somewhere in the $66-$85 million range instead of just making Hellboy III!?

Del Toro sat down with Mignola and the studio in February 2017 about making Hellboy III next after The Shape of the Water (this was right after he put a poll up on Twitter on February 18th asking whether fans still wanted it). On February 21st del Toro announced Hellboy III will never happen and he was moving on. On March 8th, Mignola announced an R-rated Hellboy reboot that was closer in tone and spirit to the comics.

I had made peace with the fact that I'd never get Hellboy III and was actually really looking forward to this darker reboot. I like Neil Marshall. I like David Harbour. Let's do this. Today we get a trailer for a Hellboy reboot that's far more del Toro than Mignola. I'm so fucking pissed right now.

Either make a darker, more comics accurate Hellboy movie (which I was cool with), or just spend the same fucking amount of money on del Toro's Hellboy III. Instead they went with "Door Number 3", which is fucking pointless.

Big Mo from EastEnders in it

Other than that doesn't look "bad", but I'm just very meh. Seen it all before in the other films (from what you can see in the trailer, hopefully the actual movie will be more different)

SFX looking kinda poor I can forgive, that's usually the case with trailers anyway.
But the prothetic work on Hellboy looks pretty bad really.

And like @OCD Geek said, this has a very big Del Toro vibe to it.

Yeah, this trailer doesn't present a movie that's MORE like the comics.
I can see how the tone will reach a wider audience, but, it also feels like more of the same comic book movie. So.

I've never read the comics so I don't have any deep loyalty to the the source material. However, I loved the two del Toro films (especially the second one) and I've been waiting for years for a third one. The way things played out behind the scenes and resulting in this film I was fine with until...well, everything OCD Geek says here. I'll still go see this one but I know the whole time I'm going to be thinking "So why didn't we just get the third del Toro film?" I loathe missed opportunities like that. The main reason I'm giving this one a go is because of David Harbour and he seems to have captured the character right.

Huh. Well I'm pretty annoyed. We miss out on Del Toro's Hellboy III for a movie that looks exactly like someone trying to make their own sequel to his movies. And it's not that annoyance that makes me say that this looks worse than the previous two. Perplexing. I'll be surprised if this approach works for them, but stranger things have happened. (Pun intended.)

Trailer's very meh. Not bad, but not thrilling either. I'll likely see the movie, but I have no expectations.

Looks like a cheapo cross between GDT's movies and Kingsman, complete with the old-lady-guarding-the-secret-entrance ripped off from The First Avenger, and with a glaringly worse voice on Hellman. Seems like a hard pass at this point, especially since I wasn't nuts about GDT's entries in the first place.

...Am I the only one that can't understand a damn thing Harbour is saying in that trailer? (Nothing against the man himself, I've liked his work since 'The Newsroom'.)

I know this isn't being fair to this new cast and crew, but my affection for the character comes solely from GMT's movies (never got around to reading the comics) and with that trilogy left forever unfinished I think it's going to be hard for me to enjoy this.
