Legend of the Seeker anyone?

Full disclosure: I'm trying to get a feel for interest in the new Sam Raimi-produced show "Legend of the Seeker." The show has some Star Trek connections, namely Ken Biller (Voyager) and Mike Sussman (Voyager, Enterprise).

The show is based on the Terry Goodkind "Sword of Truth" series of novels, that began with "Wizard's First Rule." Currently filming in New Zealand, the show will debut on November 1 in syndication. Mostly likely to air on a Saturday night in most markets.

It should be fun, especially if you like epic fantasy stories.
 
I'll only watch if it glorifies torture and killing unarmed civilians - like the original.

The people you're promoting were responsible for the worst series of Star Trek (Voyager) and the worst pseudo science fiction series ever (Enterprise)? And you think this is a good thing, that people will watch because of their previous fiascos?

I am very unimpressed with what I have seen so far. Richard looks like he belongs in a CW highschool drama complete with patchy stubble and artfully mussed up hair(you have illustrations right on the covers of half the books to show you what he looks like, use it!) and I got no hint of what it is actually supposed to be about from the teaser. . . it is just a bunch of actiony and dramatic looking shots thrown together with generic fantasy taglines like "A HERO WILL RISE!" "THE TRUTH WILL BE REVEALED!".

I'm not a serious hardcore fan of the series, I never finished it and often found him overbearing and repetitive, so don't think this is just an angry fanboy. Perhaps I'm just not your target audience (Favorite current shows: Lost, Dexter, BSG, The Office, Mad Men) but I'm a huge literary fantasy nerd, so this is something that SHOULD appeal to me. Why not apply modern dramatic TV stylings to a fantasy story? Why this frenetic mishmash of cgi-enhanced bullet-time action scenes? I want good acting and good writing. . . those are my main demands, and I think the same can be said for most of the audience.

In other words, my response is not very positive.
 
Yeah I saw that trailer (or some trailer) before - I'll take a look at the first episode but I'm really not expecting much out of it. The trailer made it look very ordinary. And why change the name? Wizard's First Rule is at least memorable. Legend of the Seeker, blech. Why not name it Yet Another Generic Fantasy Tale Like You've Seen a Million Times Before.

And the Star Trek writers whose names you are touting aren't the ones most of us remember as the guys who made Star Trek great. You need to glom onto Ron Moore, Ira Behr, Rene Echevarria, Robert Hewitt Wolfe, etc. Or the Reeve-Stevenses, they were pretty notable for trying to bring ENT up to snuff.
 
Well I'm looking forward to the show and I think Sam Raimi will deliever a good one.
 
The name was changed, according to Terry Goodkind at Comic-Con, because the show isn't about wizard's so much as it's about heroes, i.e. Richard Cypher. Goodkind was worried that the first thing to happen to a show called Wizard's First Rule is that the name would be shortened to "Wizards." The new title reflects the scope of the series, which should move beyond the contents of the first novel.

Sam Raimi says his interest and subsequent involvement in the project was inspired by the romantic aspect between Richard and Kahlan. Producer Rob Tapert mentioned that the lack of big name stars means they can afford to put more up on the screen. Which should be a good thing.

As for Mike and Ken, they are both veterans of genre TV and, in fairness, responsible for some of the better episodes of their respective series. While both the 7th season of Voyager and Enterprise may not have been consistent on the whole, they each had their moments.

As for the trailer, that was shot prior to the show going into full production. (I envisioned Richard with longer hair, personally.)

I appreciate any and all feedback. Please feel free to be honest!
 
I'm gonna give it a chance. It can't be any worse than the BBC Robin Hood series. Looks like a new 21st Century version of Herc and Xena, being that it's another Sam Raimi production.

After having watched the Dungeons & Dragons sequel, I always thought that something like that could be made into a series. And the fact that this series looks like it's gonna use some of the New Zealand regions that LOTR used, rather than the Aukland regions that Herc and Xena used, it should have a bit more epic feel/look to it.
 
I liked the books, and the trailer looks cool indeed, though I'm wary of some of the changes. Richard doesn't look as manly as I think he should, and the TV format necessitates cutting out a lot of the sex and violence, the name change is baffling, but still - it looks cool. I'll definitely give it a chance.

Absolutely my favourite Enterprise-writer.

I'm really no real fans of the books beyond book 3 or so, but that's mostly due to padding that I guess won't be a problem in a TV-show-format.

I will follow at least the first season, and hope that it will turn out good.
 
Okay, I can buy (and I agree with) the argument against calling the series "Wizard's First Rule," but why not call it "The Sword of Truth," instead? I mean, that is the name of the novel series. Is it because they want to avoid using a generic, cliched fantasy name? Because "Legend of the Seeker" isn't exactly original or dynamic.
