Left 4 Dead 2-details

Xbox magazine has the scoop-no more corner hiding to stop "event" hordes. You trip the event-then you have to stop it somewhere else. Otherwise the zombies keep coming. Plus, it's got a smarter AI that can re-arrange the paths and new Infected creatures, new incendiary ammo and hand-held weapons. There's a new game type(un-announced) and it seems there just might be Leaderboards! I can't wait!

You forgot the best part:

Frying pans.

I cannot wait to crush a zombie's head with a frying pan.

Kar-BONG!

They are also giving The Director control of jet bombers during the fifth campaign/final sequence. They will randomly bomb a bridge you have to cross to escape-while you are crossing.

I didn't forget the frying pan-"handheld weapons" is what I said. There's also a baseball bat and a chainsaw announced so far.

It's a matter of proper emphasis.

You should have said, "there are handheld weapons, like baseball bats, chainsaws--and fucking FRYING PANS!" ;)

And yet there are players still bitching and crying and talking about boycotts.

I admit, I'll probably wait a couple of months for the price to come down. But I can't wait to play this!

Ah cool! Adds a nice Michael Bay touch to the story. "AHHH HURRRY!! THE JETS ARE COMIIIIING!" With lots of slow motion running with explosions going off in the background. :D

Wah Wah it should be free, boo hoo, it's not fair TF2 gets free shit, we should too wah.

Hey, it's a perfectly valid point. Plenty of people bought L4D expecting the same support that TF2 got. It's a slap in the face to spend $50 for a game and then find out it was practically a beta test.

Fortunately I never bought Left 4 Dead, but I would have been pissed if I did.

Ah, piss off. It is not a valid point, how many games get that sort of support?
Sure I'd love free games too, but I don't expect a totally new game for free.

Game X gets lots of support. Other games from the publisher, such as Game A, doesn't get lots of additional content outside of an episodic installment every few years.

Therefore, Game Y, despite being an entirely different game that was largely produced by an outside developer prior to acquisition, should experience the same level of support as Game X?

That dog don't hunt.

(In any event, TF2 on the 360 gets jack shit, so I don't really care.)

Thank you.

Free updates aren't always a good thing.

I had been playing Red Orchestra for about a year and a half when Tripwire Interactive released an update that made it impossible for me to play any more.

Essentially, they had improved the game to the point that it wouldn't run on my old computer.

They were able to fix the problem on most computers like mine, but never on mine, for some reason.

You're right. Just because one game from a publisher gets significant free updates dosen't mean every game must. You're right about that. However Valve guaranteed free content for Left 4 Dead similar to Team Fortress 2 prior to the game being released.

Valve said:
Speaking to VideoGamer.com at Leipzig Games Convention, the Valve co-founder and managing director said the developer intended to follow a similar downloadable content policy as it has with Team Fortress 2.

Valve said:
"So we'll do the same thing with Left 4 Dead where we'll have the initial release and then we'll release more movies, more characters, more weapons, unlockables, achievements, because that's the way you continue to grow a community over time."

More characters? More weapons? Sure sounds like what we were originally promised for free we are now being asked to pay for. Not only that, but a sequel so soon is going to do the opposite of "growing a community over time". The sequel will split the players between two different games.

You paid $50 for a game. I don't know how much games normally cost in the US, but a quick currency converter check says that's £30. A normal retail game costs £39.99 in the UK, so it sounds like you got it cheap. That game received almost universally excellent reviews and has received numerous game of the year awards from different bodies.

So, did you enjoy it ? If there was never going to be any further DLC would you be able to still say you had your fun ?

Gabe Newell has already said that DLC support, that 99% of other publishers would charge you for, for the first game will continue.

Try being a sports game fan for five minutes where they update the squads and kits every year and call that a full price game. Or a music game fan where they change the setlist and call that a full price game, or even just release one with a bunch of tracks from previous games in the series.

^That's pretty much my reaction as well.

I am frankly amazed at the amount of entertainment certain game companies are basically giving away for free.

To use my favourite online FPS as an example, once again: I bought Red Orchestra for 40 dollars, Canadian, three years ago.

I've played it for three years, receiving numerous free updates and mods along the way, without ever having to pay an additional dime, to anyone.

I started playing Left 4 Dead only fairly recently--after Valve let people play it for free for a weekend. Their marketing scheme worked--I bought the game right away, after I tried it. But I've already gotten more than my money's worth.

In terms of dollars spent to hours of entertainment received, online shooters are a fantastic bargain compared to--well, anything.

In my opinion, the people who are talking about boycotting L4D2 have lost all sense of perspective.

It wouldn't surprise me if they were the same type of people who vociferously defend their 'right' to download anything for free, laws or no laws.

Not to mention that in the same article I read, Valve made it clear there would be more DLC for the original, including a 5v4 game mode. In fact, they made it clear that they will continue to upgrade the original even after the new one comes out. The only reason they made the new one a separate game is they added so much to what was s'posed to be DLC that it took on a life of its own. They said they had as many on the team for the new game at the start as the final team for the original(software teams tend to grow with need-the original had like 14 people on it and grew to 350). I expect to get even more use out of my original after the 2cnd comes out-if nothing else, i would miss Bill demanding; "What the hell are you doing, Francis?" :)

I'm a little disappointed by the lack of L4D content. I didn't expect as much new content as TF2, though I was expecting Valve to bring out a couple of new campaigns, some created by them and some of the best community made ones like they do with TF2, along with a few more unique survival mode levels that weren't in the campaign mode like the lighthouse level.

I still plan on buying L4D2 though, but I am a little disappointed in Valve. If they pull this again in 2010 by releasing very little content for L4D2 and then releasing L4D3 I might be done with the series.

Personally I'm hoping people who already have L4D on their Steam account get a discount on L4D2, and full integration with the first game so we can play the old levels without switching to the old game.
