I say Geordi, being the gentleman, wouldn't pursue her until the husband was out of the picture. Divorced, died, fell in a warp core...etc...

Way I've always figured it: She was a focused career driven starship R&D engineer and warp physicist. Just like today, her and her husband had issues cause she was more focused on her work than here marriage they simply grew apart over time cause of it. Her and Geordie meet up again somewhere down the line and she realizes that the two of them are two peas in a pod.
