Law & Order: LA Version 1.5 Discussion

Amazing that they had such a storied franchise whimper down to this. Really, they should have collapsed the flagship and Criminal Intention together with some occasional LA two parters for one or two more seasons, send the franchise out on a classy note. Yes, admit television is changing, but wrap things up in some sort of respect on your own terms. Instead what did they do? Try and go all young and stupid and flashy and screwed themselves. Sigh.

Yeah, Technically SVU may be strong, but come on, it is a shadow of its former self, too. Gave up on that one once they relegated Munch to nothing. Actually, I wonder what kind of ratings Homicide would get if it were on today?

I mean, HLOTS is on Centric at like 5 am, there isn't a prime time spot for it? A lot of the same cast and crew, like David Simon doing The Wire, are also on Treme. What are there ratings like? Can there really be that much a of a difference between ratings dollars, advertising, or subscription money that allows cable to produce so many better shows than networks? Or do networks just have their heads up their butts like they did when they decided to go with LoLa? If Trial by Jury didn't work with the late and wonderful Jerry Orbach, they should have known better.

^Ya? What is Ya?

I swear, networks should just go all retro and show their backlogs. Would classic Wonder Woman or Bionic Woman get the 1 or 2 mil that the new and already gone ones never got the chance to?

Can Law & Order fans here vote for whether or not you like Alana De La Garza?

She's not getting much love in the quantity of votes (though she is in the quality of votes). Thanks. :)

As an actress, I felt she was the best second chair since Carmichael. I don't participate in BOTW threads, though.

I don't hold her in such high regard. I can remember the days of Richard Brooks as Robinette and Jill Hennessy as Kincaid. Those characters had substance! Angie Harmon's Carmichael was probably the last of them, but we haven't seen a second chair strong since then.

^

Ya realize SVU is still goin' strong, right?

"Strong" is relative; its viewership is about half of its peak and creatively it's never been worse.

I agree 100% with Timby.

Benson and especially Stabler have to be the most inept detectives in the NYPD. Will the writers please let Cragen backhand Stabler next time the latter disobeys Cragen saying "Let It Drop?"

Both Cabot and Novak were gone as ADA's in pretty hard to bring them back circumstances, yet both have returned. Novak's replacement, Greylek, was there for a few episodes and then gone to be replaced by Sharon Stone and Christine Lahti and a myriad of others.

And what does Munch do? Take weeks of vacation at a time?

This show is just a mess.

That was my point. She was better than the people that followed Carmichael. Personally, I think Jamie Ross was my favorite. Either way, she was a step back in the right direction. I only saw one Law and Order LA episode since the reboot, but she was fine there as well.

I actually like the ADA that SVU has been using lately - Sherri West, played by L&O veteran Francie Swift. She's better than any other ADA they've had since Novak, IMHO.

I think the major factor was their working with Ben Stone instead of McCoy.

Kincaid and Robinette did, but not Carmichael. I also think Kincaid's character was much stronger after she was paired with McCoy (before that, she was fairly generic).

Just watched the latest episode ("Hayden Tract")...

I take it the cancellation means we won't get a wrap-up to the storyline of TJ going after Winters' killer?

How many episodes are left? There is one airing next week, but nothing in the channel guide as to what episode it is.

Don't expect it to get better: Neal Baer has left to make shows for CBS, while the guy (whose name I forget) who ran the last two seasons of Criminal Intent is now in charge of SVU.

With the recent reports that, in response to Mariska Hargitay's request for a lighter workload for the same salary, Benson will star in the first 13 episodes and then move into a "supervisor" role (to be replaced by Jennifer Love Hewitt), and Meloni still holding out for a raise ... I have no idea what to think of SVU anymore. I'd bet real money that next season will be the last, though -- the show is Meloni and Hargitay, and neither of them seem particularly interested in staying anymore unless the paycheck increases.

BING-bong! Shark, meet jump.

A supervisor role...perhaps if Munch retires (as it seems he must have already done :p ), Benson could be promoted to Sergeant or even Lieutenant - don't know if you have to go through the former to get to the latter - and serve as Cragen's second. Benson does seem more suited to a leadership role in the squad than Munch ever would be.

NBC can't afford to lose SVU unless the ratings drop to four or five million viewers. It's probably still going to have higher ratings than any new show.

Benson isn't quite as bad of Stabler but IRL she'd following out him in being booted off the force let along moving up the chain of command.

Then again I lost interest in SVU a few years back.

As to the actor's pay demands, if the network wants to go on without them I'd be saying 'nice knowing you" and show the door.

Let's all remember how Chris Noth got busted down and off the Mothership: with one punch to a city councilor's face.

Stabler beats up a witness every week. Now sure, he can be "edgy", but it has to have some basis in reality. The amount of things he does, he would've been booted out years ago. Not bad acting, just bad writing.
