Not surprised. They set him up as going to law school and being tortured by racial issues much like Paul Robinette.
So reading the Deadline article it was a mutual decision coinciding with his contract ending (along with several other cast members)
But the show is having few eps next year (cost cutting measure) and that could have been factor in his decision.
article also contains what could be seen as as spoiler for the quasi cliff hanger from the end of last season.
Hopefully this will make networks think twice about moving shows to streaming.
They're having other guest stars too. Dann Florek and such are making a return.
So I'm thinking they're trying to get viewers.

Epatha Merkerson, Dianne Wiest, Tamara Tunie, Jamey Sheridan, Alfred Molina, Bebe Neuwirth and Chris Noth.
Episodes will be episodic but there will be a season-long arc that leads up to facing off against their ultimate nemesis -- the HOA.
