Law & Order General Discussion Thread

There's some speculation that Meloni wants out of OC. Is the show over without him or could they bring in another character like Logan or Cosgrove or someone who used to be on Chicago PD to take over?

OC can no more survive without Stabler than SVU could without Benson.

Edit: Chief Bonner and Elliot make SUCH a cute couple, don't they?

OC suffered because it has relegated everyone to the background not named Stabler. The entire team could be interesting if we didn't need to spend the majority of seasons combing through Stabler's issues.

SVU keeps adding more characters and rotating through them. We've barely seen Velasco all season and he is the only one of them in the opening credits.

OC has suffered because it's a half-baked concept and with every new showrunner, the idea of what the show is takes a major turn. It's a show completely lacking identity and I am thoroughly unsurprised that NBC hasn't renewed it yet, especially if they're still considering axing the 10/9 Central hour of scripted programming.

There's scuttlebutt that OC could move to Peacock if NBC says no to bringing it back on their network.

Didn't they try that once with Jay Leno?

Yes. Leno's talk show ratings were too low for the 10 p.m. time slot, which hurt the ratings for the local news, which hurt the ratings for Conan O'Brien. So NBC punished Conan for it.

Yeah, they need to fiind a lineup and stick to it.

I mean, a real SVU unit wouldn't have a Captain working under another Captain? Or an FBI agent?

Definitely not.

In fact, I'd doubt that most real SVU units would even have any lieutenants working under a Captain on the same shift, more likely that any lieutenants would cover parts of the rotation and intermediate leadership would be covered officially by sergeants and unofficially by senior detectives.

Or an FBI agent?

Maybe a regular liaison, but not an actual integrated member of the team.

It's frustrating that Dick Wolf and his team couldn't find a way to follow reality in this case. Honestly, neither character, even as written currently, does not need to be a Captain or an FBI agent, especially the latter. How hard would it be to have her be an odd detective, a diamond in the rough, at another precinct?

Yeah, they need to fiind a lineup and stick to it.

We've barely seen Velasco this season and Ice-T has had maybe fifteen minutes of screen time. The former was brought in as replacement for Jamie Gray Hyder and had this background in undercover work and he has basically become wallpaper. I would have rather kept Hyder, whose character had her flaws, but was well acted and written.
Bruno has been in almost every episode this year, but really shares his best scenes with Ice-T. And did they ever mention where they sent Churlish from last year?

^ No, Churlish - another character I happen to like, BTW - just vanished into the ether. We never found out what happened to her.

On a completely unrelated matter, I hope they do another Chicago crossover. OC, especially, would lend itself to situations like that. (And I'd love to see, for example, Stabler working with Adam Ruzek. )

Maybe they should just go nuts with NBC crossovers. Stabler visits La Brea and goes undercover as a t-rex. Goren joins Quantum Leap. Fin has to report to Night Court. Benson appears on Found and asks Mosley & Associates for help in finding out what happened to all the fellow cops in her squad who disappeared without mention.

They did an interview with some of the Chicago actors and they all wanted to do more crossovers with the teams intermingling (Ruzek & Stabler, Burgess and Liv, etc.).

Now come to think of it Burgess and Liv would make a GREAT team.

And you wanna talk going nuts...bring Trudy into the mix. I'd love to be a fly on the wall when she meets Stabler.

The cast may want to do crossovers, but they're a logistical nightmare, largely due to travel and expense (since you're paying actors for extra duty), as well as schedules lining up. Remember, TV shows and movies--with very rare exceptions--are not filmed sequentially, but rather when people's calendars happen to be in alignment.

Beyond that, COVID still isn't over, and even one positive test can shut down production for an extended period of time (which happened to both Med and Fire last season).

Beyond that, SVU and the Chicago series are the most expensive dramas that NBC produces right now, largely because of location shooting costs and cast escalators. For example, there's a reason only four original starring cast members (Beghe, Hawkins, Squerciati and Flueger) are on Chicago PD nowadays (Amy Morton was a recurring / guest star during the first season, and nowadays she's lucky to get three scenes an episode), and Mariska Hargitay and Ice-T pocket a fuckton of money for every episode of SVU because they've been on the show for two and a half decades.

In any event, there won't be any crossovers this season between franchises; a an actor friend of mine here in Iowa is a guest on the May 8 episode of Chicago PD, and she shot her episode two weeks ago, which airs on May 8, and that will be episode 11 of 13; all of the weekly NBC dramas got 13-episode orders because of the strikes.

Cool. what role does she play? I'll keep an eye out for it.

I also knew someone who's done shows like this. She was in my homeroom during my senior year of high school, she has done a bunch of different roles in the L&O 'verse. Linky

No idea. She's been a friend of mine for two decades, but she is not the most talented actor to ever walk the planet; keep your head out for a blonde in her 40s with a bob haircut and you'll know her when you see her.
