Latest rumor-mongering: Tom Cruise as Captain Pike?

Cruise has always entertained me in his various roles. I haven't got a problem with a cameo from him.

I think having Cruise to play cameo as Capt. Pike is great. Regarding some commet her have been very rude and childish. Dont belive everything what tabloids are feeding you. Granted Cruise went overboard on Oprah Show, but he has been the biggest A actor past 20 years and he can also act.
Dont forget that Cruise who plucked Abrams from the world of TV to bring him on to direct Mission: Impossible: III.(great movie) and perhaps people scould be thanking him for that because maybe this was one of the reason that lead to Abrams wanting to do Star Trek movie.
So perhaps without Cruise involvement there would be no Star Trek XI movie. ;)

I find myself troubled.

Not at the fact that there is a chance that the man, the myth, the legend otherwise known as Tom Cruise could appear in our beloved new Star Trek film. Oh no. No siree bob.

I find myself troubled at the fact that all of you aren't on board with this incredibly brilliant idea.

I ask you, fellow Trek fans, what is the most important thing about Star Trek? That it lives on. And what better way to ensure sequels to our much loved movie franchise than to add to an already impressive roster the BEST ACTOR KNOWN TO EXIST. The man who makes Marlon Brando look like Yahoo Serious, the man who is a surefire 100% bonafide box office draw having already grossed $2,697,341,103 in his career, the man who can deliver a line with a grin and a wink that will literally make you shit your pants with enthusiasm, Tom Cruise.

Think of the posibilities - a Trek movie with Tom Cruise in it would gross at least 200 million (I've proven this equation scientifically, unfortunately I can't link to my secret laboratory). That to me means sequels. Sequels about Tom Cruise as Captain Pike. Think of the opportunities when you have someone as versatile and ridiculously good looking as Tom Cruise manning the captain's chair. They seem limitless, not to mention full of great acting and winning smiles.

I ask you, fellow Trekkers/ies - do we all hate Trek so much that we would kill the franchise due to some misguided feelings about Mr. Cruise?

I hope not. Dear Tom Cruise, I hope not.

And hot on the heels of that eloquence, Cruise's people have denied the rumor. Denied it, I tell you! Denied, denied, denied!

Sorry, a little "Watergate" flashback there. Where was I?

Oh, yeah. Tom's people say it ain't so. Jack Nicholson may play Gary Mitchell, though.

I think Tom's people are just being secretive and see the potential goldmine and rewarding work involved in the inevitable sequels were Mr. Cruise involved. They'll drop his involvment in the movie on us closer to the release date, whipping the entire world into a frenzy the likes of which we haven't seen since......well....ever.

So, while I have no personal affection for Mr. Cruise, and no personal appreciation for his beliefs, I haven't seen a single example of him trying to tear down others, and I've seen a lot of people trying to tear him down.

But the progressive tolerant people of Trek BBS aren't being intolerant when they completely dismiss anyone who thinks or acts differently from them, especially when they start using their limited brain capacity to start speaking ON BEHALF of the Gene Roddenberry ideology as its No. 1 authority.

Of course, what's really funny is how John Travolta's Scientology is somehow completely different than Cruise's.
I'm missing something... are you agreeing with me, when I say that I have no problem with Cruise, or are you disputing me in some way? I'm not clear on how what you said is a reply to me...

Personally, I can see it. Matt Damon, yes. Tom Hanks, yeah, he could pull it off...and Pike is probably a small enough, yet celebrated enough role to put a good A lister in, make an impression, yet not steal the show.

It's just been my experience that the people who flaunt their "open-mindedness" the most tend to be the most intolerant. Of course, that they need to flaunt it is telling in itself. But that really only applies to the people here who are suddenly going all Mr. Stinky Pants on us regarding the sacred cow of Trek.

Although if you want to bring up gay-bashing, in a way it does remind me of the so-called X-Men fans who were upset that a gay man had been cast as Magneto, especially when you consider what the overall theme of X-Men is about.
That's a really interesting point. I had no idea that Ian McKellan is gay (actually, I still don't... I'm only hearing it here... but I'll treat it as a given).

The thing about that is that his portrayal of Magneto... or of Gandalf for that matter... were great portrayals and had pretty much zero sexually-oriented content. I couldn't care less about who the guy sleeps with in his free time... I just enjoyed the performances on-screen. What he does in his private life is just that... private. Aka... "none of any of any of our business." ;)

I'm agreeing with you, but in a pouring-gasoline-onto-the-fire kind of way. :)

I believe Hanks is a Trek fan. Wasn't he considered for a role in Insurrection? I remember he was talked about for one of the Next Gen films.

Well, I also thought he was wrong for Mission Impossible. He's just not a team player. Cameo fine - yes, Captain, hailing frequencies open. His ego is out of controll.

I think he may have been considered for Zephram Cochrane.
As I understand it, when he was asked to play Cochrane, he couldn't because of prior commitments that created scheduling conflicts. That's the only thing that stopped him from doing it.

If Cruise is in it, I definitely won't be going. I can't stand that guy.

I don't want Trek to be connected to him in any way.
