Latest acquisition!

Last Sunday I got the e-book of Barsk: The Elephant's Graveyard by Lawrence M. Shoen. I'm mentioning this here because Shoen is a member of The Klingon Language Institute, and he wrote The Klingon Hamlet, the story jubHa in Strange New Worlds III, and worked on Klingon translations of the comics, Malibu DS9 #31: Remembrance, Starfleet Academy #15: MangHom qaD!, and Klingons: Blood Will Tell #1: Against Their Nature.

Latest Trek haul

A bit delayed due to returning from USA...

From the “Silver Foil Collection” created by the New Zealand Mint, featuring a TMP A4-sized poster printed on 35gms of 999 fine silver. It comes in a cardboard sleeve and a perspex frame for hanging. (There was also a “Star Wars” [“Episode 4: A New Hope”] poster in the same series.) Also IDW’s finales to “Discovery: The Light of Kahless” (#4) and “TNG: Through the Mirror” (#5), plus a “Mirror Universe” magnetic insignia.

New “Star Trek” comics from IDW: “New Visions” #22 and “Discovery: Succession” #3, featuring the Mirror Universe counterpart of Airiam.

This week's exciting purchase!

Star Trek: Lost Scenes
by Ian McLean, on Flickr

The 270pp hardcover book by David Tilotta & Curt McAloney (Titan, Aug 2018) matches up missing scripted scenes from episodes of TOS with restored clip frames, as sold by Lincoln Enterprises, over many decades.

Latest Trek stuff

"Autographs of the Final Frontier: Rare Signatures, Warm Sentiments and Handwritten Filming Memories from the Cast, Crew and Guest Stars of TOS" (Minkatek Press, 2018) by Gerald Gurian; a bizarre/racy early parody novel, "Satyr Trek" (Olympia Press, 1970) by Ray Kainen; and the gorgeous mottled-blue double-LP pressing of the expanded soundtrack of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture".

From the blurb of "Satyr Trek: "Bored marriages have led to many an adventure, but never anything like SATYR TREK! Raunch Gaffer innocently applies to a computer date service, just for an adult change of scenery, not of planet. His application is mysteriously chewed up, whereupon he becomes tangled in a futuristic trip, mind-rending as well as hilarious."

Picked up books five and six of Star Trek: New Frontier at Half-Price books. It was cheaper than buying them digitally.

New Trek

New stuff! “The Next Generation: Cats” by Jenny Parks (Chronicle Books), a follow-up to the TOS version; and issue #1 of IDW’s Mirror Universe spin-off comic mini-series, “The Next Generation: Terra Incognita” (aka Reg in bondage?)

Roswell: Loose Ends by Greg Cox
I wonder, if you see this Greg, do you know where it fits in with the Roswell tv series timeline?

Today’s stash includes the latest IDW “Star Trek” comic, “Discovery: Succession” #4, set in the Mirror Universe. Also or previews of cover art (in “Comic Shop News”) for the upcoming “‘Star Trek’ vs ‘Transformers’” mini-series. Appearances by Arex, M’Ress and Kali indicate that it will be in the style of the Filmation’s animated series of “Star Trek”, which is very cool!

Terra Incognita comic #2
by Ian McLean, on Flickr

Out this week: Issue #2 of the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" mini-series featuring the Mirror Universe Barclay. This issue also features a one-page text tribute to the late Harlan Ellison, by Scott Tipton, who worked with Harlan's blessing to realise the IDW Comics' mini-series of the original "City on the Edge..." script as a comic adaptation.

I also happened upon some Eaglemoss hardcovers in my local gaming store: Marvel post-TMP reprints of the DC Comic series, plus the first English language omnibus of the Wildstorm TNG/DS9 crossover, "Divided We Fall".

Stopped being a completist about Star Trek books a while back, but when Aaron Reynolds of Swear Trek fame said he was getting a copy, it seemed wrong that there’d be one in Ottawa when I didn’t have it. So I have a copy of Michael Piller’s Fade In in print.

Why do the Germans get the better covers?

I much prefer some of the US covers, and especially the Keith Birdsong version of Captain Calhoun (based on Birdsong's neighbour), but the German publisher has the advantage of looking at the US edition's cover on shelves, monitoring worldwide collector reactions, and commissioning new art.

I have really appreciated the German covers featuring Arex, M'Ress, Janos, various Andorians and the warship Therin, of course.
