Last Classic Who Story you watched

I just watched The Keeper of Traken. It was very, very boring. The Doctor, Adric, Nyssa, The Master and Tremas were ok, everyone else was boring or hilariously over the top. There were some painted eyelids pretending to be eyes, which is so low budget and garbage looking even a show with literally no budget would have been embarrassed. OVerall, outside of the end scenes with the Master and then The Master becoming Anthony Ainley, this was a very boring story. Hopefully Logopolis is better.

Logopolis is miles and miles better in my very humble opinion..

I'd love to see the Fendahl come back in the new series because hell they'd be pretty scary if done properly. Even the Time Lords wanted to use them as an actual weapon..

Y'know...As I was walking The Dog tonight, it hit me, just how much "Seeds of Doom" is a straight-up Third Doctor story. I mean any wag will tell you how well "Robot" fits in as a Third Doctor story--UNIT, Mad Scientist, taking over the Earth... But smack-dab in the middle of the Hinchcliffe Horror Era, is a straight-up Pertwee story--UNIT sends The Doctor and his assistant to investigate a weird happening. No TARDIS. A madman and his very capable henchman. The Doctor engaging in swordplay, diving vehicles, beating up henchmen. A crooked politician. The Doc, explaining the problem and no one listening to him. It's really a classic Pertwee story.

And it is a testament to Tom Baker's skill that it's taken almost 40 years for me to realize this, because he really makes the material his own.

I liked Scorby in Seeds of Doom, he was another great henchman from the Fourth Doctor era. Loved the Doctor constantly cracking jokes as his expense. I won't argue that it definitely feels like a Third Doctor era story.

Speaking of which, the most recent Third Doctor story I watched was "The Time Warrior" and I very much enjoyed. We get the debut of Sarah Jane along with the Sontarans and the first time the name Gallifrey is used. The only psuedo-historical of the Pertwee era. This was a great introduction to the Sontarans, establishing their personality and motivations well. Really entertaining group of villains, from Linx the Sontaran (who is really good) Irongron and his henchman Bloodaxe, who are all funny. One review noted that Linx and Irongron have a twisted version of the Doctor/Brigadier relationship and I would definitely agree with that. Add in Jeremy "Boba Fett" Bulloch as an archer and it's a fun story all around.
It just happened that the weekday rotation was doing "Ambassadors of Death" while the Saturday show was "Seeds of Doom." I think that's where I drew the connection that "Seeds of Doom" is essentially a 3rd Doctor story. Scorby and Reegan(?) the henchman from "Ambassadors" have a bit in common. Reegan is a bit too capable--he knows how to sabotage rocket fueling stations, and countless other things. Actually he comes up with the solution of using the Ambassadors to defeat his boss (after he's captured). Of course also, unlike Scorby, he doesn't meet a horrible fate at the hands of the monster.

"The Time Warrior" was awesome the first time I saw it. I couldn't believe how young Liz Sladen looked in it. And she's a lot more capable than we remember. Years down the road the common argument is that the Companions only existed to ask stupid questions, scream, and get rescued, but truth be told, Sarah winds up rescuing the Doctor almost more than the other way around. In "The Brain of Morbius" she has the sense not to drink the drugged wine, for example.

Logopolis is miles and miles better in my very humble opinion..
Actually, I think Logopolis is worse. The Keeper of Traken is actually fairly enjoyable, and entertaining compared to the endless technobabble of the former.

Agreed. The Keeper of Traken is one of my favorites and Adric was actually tolerable when caught and kept in the shadow of Tom Baker's gravitational pull.

I just wasn't crazy about Logopolis (I don't think it was a bad episode mind you) and the Doctor is grim 100% of the time in that one.

I like "The Happiness Patrol". There is good social commentary in the story. For me, I would categorized the story as a marginal net positive one.

I re-watched "The Caves of Androzani". I enjoyed it very much. As I watched the episode, I remember my thoughts about Peri. I felt that, based on the last story of Season 22, that the writers had finally arrived at an understanding of the relationship between Peri and the Doctor, and, if there was the planned season, that the relationship might have became one of the better ones for Classic Who. Season 23 scuppered the potential of this relationship, unfortunately.

I just watched Logopolis, and it was pretty good, and much better than The Keeper of Traken. It was a solid story, not mind blowing but entertaining. The only big problem is that Tegan is extremely obnoxious. If I could change one thing about the story, it would be that The Master would use his tissue compressor on her, preferably as soon as possible. I'd only seen Tegan before when she'd been toned down and stopped complaining about going back to London, so seeing Tegan at her worst, which I've only heard of before, was more painful than I thought. Still, she didn't ruin the story, just made a few parts very annoying.

The 4th Doctor's end was sad, although more confusing than anything. Not in why he died and regenerated, thats obvious. The Watcher is the problem. I know Doctors 1,2,3,5,6,7,8,War,9,10, and 11 didn't merge with some pure white entity to regenerate, so having no explanation for why it was here now was bizarre. It almost feels like they made The Watcher to fix problems in the story (like how to get Nyssa to Logopolis), and then decided to tie him in with the regeneration. Anyway, overall it was a solid story, although far from my favorite last story for a Doctor.

Since this is the last Tom Baker story that I plan to watch (that I hadn't already seen, I won't be watching any story from The Power of Kroll to Warrior's Gate) I'll post a few thoughts. He was a pretty good Doctor. His first few seasons were the strongest, and by Key to Time the show was pretty much at rock bottom from a story quality perspective, but Tom baker was always good. I think he should have regenerated at the end of Season 15, at which point he would have been going out with a better legacy in my opinion. My favorite companion for The Doctor is probably a tie between Leela, K-9 and Sarah Jane. My least favorite companion is a tie between Romana II and Tegan. Romana II for her stupid comments in City of Death (which is the only time I've seen her, but she made a horrible impression), and Tegan because she was super irritating.

My favorite story is easily The Talons of Weng Chiang, followed by Genesis of the Daleks. My most hated is The Androids of Tara, with a special dishonorable mention to The City of Death, which almost certainly would have won the award if I could have made it through the whole story. Overall, the 4th Doctor isn't my favorite, but he was very good, and when his stories were good, they were generally very good.

The Keeer Of Traken was the best realized of Johnny Byrne's three stories, Logopolis is a mess by comparison. It's a shame that Tom Baker went out on a story like Logopolis, Bidmead wrapped several good sci-fi concepts around an iffy script.

Doctor Who Revisited: The TV Movie.

I was glad that it was the non edited American version, the BBC version is rather jumpy at the start. The story despite the gernal dislike for it holds rather well and Paul McGann does have his charms as the new Doctor. And for me when it originally aired the movie meant there was some hope in Doctor Who's return, of course those hopes were just quickly dashed. I still like the movie was filmed and general production design and I for one like how it started with McCoy. Grace certainly makes some great Doctor Who history, she the first companion to kiss the Doctor and later turn down his offer to travel with him.

I found this gem on youtube.. Funny the Doctor criticizes his companion's clothes... I found that bit funny.

I don't think you can do proper video links here but here's the link...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcwiXY7YCyY

You have to bracket the link on one side with "[yt]" and "[/yt]" on the other.

The problem I seem to have is that for some reason the system won't let me "Preview Post" or edit the post without the link disappearing.

Well, The Doctor does have a point, Peri does look kind of goofy (although it is the 80s, so its not unexpected). Obviously the rest of the scene is horrible and the fact it got filmed was pretty screwed up. Although from interviews I've seen with her Bryant actually liked the scene, or at least didn't mind it, so I guess that makes it not quite as horrible. Personally, I think it set a very bad tone for The Doctor, and I think it hurt him more than the coat. Easily the worst 6th Doctor moment.

I had not watched much of the show at the time when it was on TV and this video was the first time I had watched this scene. It made me cringe a lot.
