Last Classic Who Story you watched

The Creature from the Pit

It's a very too-basic storyline, but - dang - the cast elevate it into something special, has different plot beats than most (pt 4 has Lady Adrasta dispatched and nobody knows how things will really turn out) and it's nice to see K9 put out of action.

My slow motion rewatch of Trial of a Time Lord has ended with The Ultimate Foe. Even allowing for all the problems with scrapped stories and whatnot, it's easily my least favourite part of the whole Trial.

Turlough doesn't become tolerable until the story in which he leaves (it helps immensely that his Black Guardian story arc is finally finished). When I think of seeing the Doctor and Turlough, relaxing on the beach (Mark Strickson was definitely eye candy in this one - shirt, shorts, bathing suit...), I wished Turlough would have stayed on. Without Nyssa and Tegan screeching and whining all the time, the Doctor and Turlough could have developed a respect and friendship like the 2nd Doctor and Jamie did.

Last one I watched in full was The Three Doctors, showing it to my partner for the first time. Currently trying to make it through Colony in Space but it's honestly boring me to tears.

Helps a little to be a Coronation Street fan. Helen Worth, who's played Gail on Corrie for most of the last fifty years, is in it. So every so often when watching "Colony in Space" you get to think, damn, it's weird seeing her so young.

I just finished Colin Baker's two seasons. He was much better than I originally remembered. I think maybe people were put off by how big a change he was from Peter Davison. Also, the whole "Trial of a Time Lord" concept just didn't work for me. It strikes me as a foreshadowing of all this 13th Doctor's mumbo jumbo of the Timeless Child. I agree with a previous post about Peri being a silly airhead who didn't add that much. The transition from Peri to Mel was done poorly as was the regeneration. I know this is because Colin Baker refused to participate in the regeneration scenes. Anyway on to Sylvester McCoy.

I always liked Baker as an actor (he has such a fantastic voice). It was the writing in his era that I had a problem with.
Problem was simply that Saward didn't like the casting. Right or wrong, an actor is dependent on the scripts to give him good material, and if the script editor can't 'see' it it's not going to go well.

Watched Death to the Daleks for the first time last week before listening to The Dalek Protocol (another Big Finish story). It was...interesting. The Great City of Exxilon actually looked pretty darn great for a model (its destruction was another story but probably looked much more effective on small screens in the 70s). Bellal was a surprisingly good character.

The tests inside the city left...something to be desired but I appreciated that the Third Doctor was finally able to win a battle of the mind after previously losing to the Keller Machine and Omega. He got better at it!

The Daleks being able to quickly convert to physical weapons was about the only good thing they did this story. They came across as pretty pathetic and frantic overall despite Michael Wisher doing his best with what he had.

Sarah Jane was used very well in this one. Always nice to see.

Overall, was it a great story? No. But it was pretty decent.

I recently subscribed to Britbox through Amazon Prime and started browsing through the classic Doctor Who episodes. I watched the first part of The Time Monster there for the heck of it, then decided to pop in my DVD and watch that instead. No special features on Britbox, after all. Always fun to watch the Third Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith. I've only seen this one once before.
