This month i finished reading the Song of Ice and Fire novels by George RR Martin. i didn't actually read a Game of Thrones as I watched the TV series and decided to read the second book first because I was anxious to get on with the story. i will be buying the sixth book in the series as soon as it come out.
I am now reading The Given Land by Thomas Allen. It is set in New Zealand and it is about the journey of 5 flightless birds - an elderly kakapo, a young kiwi, two huia who have had their wings clipped as a punishment and a kea who has lost his feathers in a fire - as they undertake an epic journey to reach the capital city of the bird world and warn the avian inhabitants that the land has been invaded by stoats. The stoats are pursuing the little band of heroes. Eseentially it is a bird version of Lord of the Rings.

I was recently reading the anthology Nyarlathotep Cycle, which included an excellent short novel by Lin Carter, among other things. Now I've started Chronicles Of Pern, another anthology. After that, probably Firebird, the latest Jack McDevitt novel.

Is that still in print? I'm surprised anybody younger than me remembers it.

The Crisis of Islam: Bernard Lewis attempts to establish some reasons for terrorism and hostility against the US. Not complete, but should be helpful to someone new.
Plain and Simple: A Woman's Journey to the Amish, Sue Bender. An artist opts to spend a summer with the Amish after finding their quilts intriguing. She enjoys the atmosphere, if not the power of tradition and orthodoxy, and tries to incorporate lessons from the Amish into her own life -- being more mindful, taking pleasure in work, and so on.
God Has a Dream, Archbishop Desmond Tutu. This is for a book club. It consists of little letters of encouraging to the reader on a wide range of topics -- forgiveness,anger, meditation, etc. Mostly what you'd expect. There were a few quotations I liked, but I'm not exactly his target audience.
