Larry Gelbart dies

It is a testament to the longevity of the show he was a massive part of that the top tv network in Australia STILL plays it at 5:00pm every weekday afternoon. We're not talking some shitty little pay tv "channel" - it would be the equivalent in the US of NBC showing M*A*S*H at 5:00pm.

Another classic writer from Your Show of Shows.

Gelbart wrote stage and film as well as TV. A great, sardonic wit and, as with fellow Show alums Neil Simon, Mel Brooks, Sheldon Keller, Carl Reiner and Woody Allen, just a master at intelligent wordplay.

Is it just me sounding like an old guy, but do they really not make shows like MASH anymore? Shows that seem edgy and important, but never sacrifice the laughs.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Gelbart. Your legacy lives on.
My condolences to your family and friends.

Godspeed, sir.

J.

In his USO memoir Don't Shoot, It's Only Me, Bob Hope mentions that Larry Gelbart accompanied him on some of his USO tours during the Korean War. Thus Gelbart saw firsthand what he later wrote about on M*A*S*H.

I several times had the pleasure of 'speaking' to Elsig, as he was known, on alt.tv.mash. Once, he even 'gave' me an unused S4 plot to use in my fanfic. It involved Radar feeling disloyal to Henry's memory, due to taking on Potter as a new father figure.

He was a great man, all the greater because he was self-effacing. One episode of 'Animaniacs' featured the 'Chick-N-Boo' skit playing out with overworked script writers on 'The Flintstones' movie awaiting the arrival of 'Larry Gelboo'. The real LG gave his blessing to the skit. That was from the man himself, as well.
