Spoilers Lanterns discussion thread

Well the actor and actress who play the parents seem to think the mother is a "superhero without a cape" and "the real hero of the series". The writer of the episode also seems to think we should at their actions positively.

Yeah. Also shooting an aople off their kids head with live ammunition is insane. I would hope the writers wouldnt make her a hero. But ill have to say they are beating up Hal Jordan. Making him seem more a villain in the moms eyes because she felt hal didnt earn the role of GL. She judged Hal and didn't even know him.
Depends on your point of view.

They are, however, rather clearly being misled.

Hard to see more than one point of view after what she and her husband did to their son. I dont care how good a shot the father was. Shes not a hero in my book. They abused theor own son to make a point and to get noticed. Shes also self absorbed. Shes doing it more for herself than her son it seems at times. She was trying to impress the guardian when she met her. Lol

It's odd that the only DC productions I have truly enjoyed in recent years are two limited series from HBO Max - "The Penguin" and "Lanterns". Everything else has either been "eh" or "no thanks".

I'll usually defend the use of the Cliffhanger as a storytelling mechanic, but i can't with the end of this week's episode. Not only was it repeating a 'bit' from the Pilot, the show did it to manufacture tension between John and Hal that doesnt need to keep being held on to and is only being held on to to manufacture Melodrama.

It wasn't enough to drag the episode as a whole down, but it does make me give the show's writers just the slightest bit of 'side-eye'.

Perhaps this observation has already been made in the thread, but it’s probably notable that HBO, unlike Marvel (at least, when Marvel first started streaming shows), is used to the tv format and has experienced television showrunners & producers, rather than filmmakers who in some cases simply tried to make a long film over 8 hours as opposed to two.

Hmmm . . . you have a point.

The one major problem I have with FPAlpha's theory based on the rules established thus far in the story - never mind what's gone on in other media - is the "Guardian" having a green power ring available.

If they're holding off the reveal (based on other media) that the manhunters use the green tech as well, they'd better get to it, because it's getting to where any ground rules that haven't been laid down will feel like a cheat.

Other than that, the minor problem with the theory is that it's kind of obvious. But then, so was Zoe = manhunter, and they managed that when it turned out that the machine's identity won't be the major mystery of the show.

All in all, though, I like the theory. Everything about the Guardian's shady behavior fits into it nicely.

Here's the deal: the Stewarts don't know the exact date that Jordan got the ring, and it turns out there's a gap between that event and John Sr's later traumatic experience.

The problem is that the whole drama of the Guardians seems totally unnecessary if one looks at it from a realistic point of view. The Guardians created the Manhunters, founded the GL Corps, designed the rings and they exercise total control over the Corps ( at least in the comics but i think we can safely assume it's also like this in the show).

So at any point they can just go screw it, kick Hal out and if John really is the golden ( or green) boy the Guardians think he is they will just give him the ring, close all the drama and direct their attention elsewhere. The fact that they don't raises all kinds of suspicions and alarms with me.

Now the show itself, the vibe they created, is awesome but i have seen similar well written shows stumble and faceplant when they try to resolve these plot points and red herrings and it just doesn't work ( Lost for example, coincidentally also written by Lindelof).

Then there are shows where everybody thinks there are red herrings and they aren't, just clues no matter how subtle ( or not, some fans can give Sherlock Holmes a run for his money) that normal people like me only realize after the season or show is done and you can rewatch it with the full knowledge and don't believe how one can miss all the clues.

I am not sure where Lanterns falls and i hope we find out by the end of the season. I hope the writing is as tight as it seems and the red herrings really are just diversions and the actual resolution makes absolute sense or they go the easy path and resolve it the way observant fans expect, which wouldn't be bad too - the possibility of mistakes is lower that way and the "danger" of a fan shitstorm is lessened when you can point to all the crumbs laid out in the episodes.

Actually, my question was, in what way do you believe Bernadette was trying to, as you said, "impress" the Guardian, not 'when was she trying to impress the Guardian.'
Right when she first met the guardian. When they were standing outside and she was holding John as a baby. That scene.

This is part of why I think that the whole thing with how John is supposed to take over as Green Lantern is part of some plot by Laura Linney's Guardian the rest of the Guardians and GL Corps aren't aware of.

We're only 4 episodes in, but I'm starting to feel like people are going way too far with the speculation and the suspicion of ambiguity and are just setting themselves up for disappointment.

Dude.

"How" not "Where" or "When".

And for nine tenths of that conversation, Bernie thought that Laura was just some crazy cracker.

Huh. I just said the scene outside when she was holding baby john and met the guardian. Remember when the Guardian showed her true self? She went from looking like a librarian to a giant blue space alien. Its right there.

"Don't freak out."

"You a lying cracker."

(Wibble wobble)

"You a space cracker."

You're still telling us "when" when we asked you "how"?

What did she do, what did you see her do to be deferential or respectful or obedient or worshipful, that we did not.

No. I said she was trying to impress the guardian. Acting like a big shot.

You're not understanding my question. You said Bernadette was trying to impress the Guardian. I'm asking you why you thought Bernadette was trying to impress the Guardian? What did Bernadette say to the Guardian that made you think Bernadette was trying to impress the Guardian?
