Maxum, I enjoyed your post very much. In the ice-cave scene, the first thing Kirk asks Spock when he finally believes Spock is from an alternate reality is: "Did you know my father?"

Thanks, Jeri. That's one of my favorite scenes, and it reinforces how much his father's loss has impacted his life. I wish the writers had given us a little more backstory regarding Kirk's life without his father because that loss is pretty painful for Kirk.

Chris did that beautifully; as he did the point where Spock releases him from the mind meld, and Kirk's eyes, face and mouth are all swollen -- as though he himself had been weeping. I think that's my favorite scene from an acting standpoint.

It was a great scene, and again, that's what made Pine's performance, for me, so effective. I love seeing that emotion on his face. I think many of my favorite scenes were the ones with Spock Prime because Kirk sort of let down his guard around him and allowed his emotions and insecurities to come to the surface. When he asks about his father, he just seems so pained and desperate to know anything about his father. It was really well done.

I have to agree with Jeri and Maxum. though, I must say that Shatner did show some vulnerability in both TOS and the movies... City on the Edge of Forever and STIII: The Search for Spock come to mind...

I agree. City on the Edge of Forever is one of my all time favorites, especially the scene when Kirk first starts to head across the street to save Edith, and Spock yells out to him, and Kirk stops. Then McCoy tries to save her, and Kirk stops him. Then you hear the screech of the tires and screams, and Kirk just rests his head against McCoy's shoulder in despair. McCoy says something like "I could have saved her. You deliberately stopped me. Jim, do you now what you just did," and Spock says, "He knows, doctor."

Yep, that scene is imbedded in my memory. It was fantastic. That being said, I feel that Pine brought much more emotion to the one movie he was in as Kirk then I've seen in Shatner most of the TOS run. Pine really ran the gamut of emotions: cockiness, courage, humor, arrogance, fear, vulnerability, anger, confidence, uncertainty, joy, and pride. He showed all this in one movie. That's why his performance stands out for me. That doesn't mean that I didn't thoroughly enjoy Shatner as well.

but Pine really imbued Kirk with a lot of latent introspection. I agree with the scenes that they point out above. another scene -- an offshoot of the Kirk/Pike scene in the bar -- that I love is when, after Pike leaves -- Pine allows Kirk to drop all the bravado and the blase attitude he's been displaying and picks up the Kelvin salt shaker and stares at it. at that moment, all I see in his eyes is the look of a haunted, wounded man who is very alone, and very lost. and he does it without a single word.

I like how you interpreted that scene. I agree, and that's what I meant earlier when I said that Kirk wears armor around himself. Although he can be cocky and arrogant, there is very much a wounded young man underneath. I think you summed it up nicely in that Kirk is alone. I hadn't really thought about that before, but he is alone and lost before he meets Pike in that bar.

it was a small scene, but it stayed in my mind enough for me to realize what an understated yet emotive actor this guy is.

I love actors who can pull that off.

he's really, really good. and we're really, really lucky to get three such excellent actors (not to mention the others) in the main troika.

I wholeheartedly agree. :techman:

DevilEyes, after reading your first post in praise of Spock, I think you may be the other half of my soul. :adore:

You're right about the almost frightening (thrilling!) intensity the character possesses, captured to great effect by both Nimoy and Quinto. Quinto's eyes-- yikes-- my heart skips a beat thinking about looking up into them. He is a Spock on the edge, which some people don't care for, I suppose, but he tickles my fancy just fine.

More photos of the man who inspired me to go back to acting classes:

It was me who posted the link. MWAHAHA! Spock shall make a comeback! (And I'm pimping the site for you guys.)

Dare I make an IMDb-style drive-by on Sarmy? Yay or nay? LOL.

Personally, I'd rather the thread be people who loved the movie or the franchise more than people who are invested in an actor more than the movie.

But, I am not that boss of such things...

mmmmmm, I love that pic of Chris with the green background! He's got that nice laid-back vibe.

OK, I found some rather off-beat pics of Zach for your amusement, if not edification.

Indeed, Zach.

 This one is absolutely begging for a caption contest, but I'm not touching it.

But it's ok they're both sexy beasties.

I'm not a fan of CP's facial hair. It's more beard-like than stubble. ZQ does stubble well (and he keeps it from looking remotely like a beard). I prefer CP clean-shaven. Though recently ZQ was sporting the start of a rather amusing pornstache. It made him look Spanish. I'm thinking the 'stache is definitely short-term.

CP and ZQ look all tuckered out from running in those pictures!

Nice snake picture. The expression is adorable and a bit unsure/awkward combined with amusement.

Though my favorite is still ZQ looking like he's going to lick Hayden's exposed brain and having the kitchen knife sticking out of him. Priceless. Especially because of all the speculation prior to that episode that Sylar ate the brains and that episode finally answered what he does. "Eat your brain? Claire, that's disgusting." By far his funniest picture, IMO. And look at that tongue. ;)

Funny thing about that baby Spock scene... The baby is a little girl. Granted, it's a baby. But it's probably the first time (?) Spock has been played by a girl!

And just because a baby with a pointed ear is too cute for words... Aww. I want a director's cut. You got to admit that the kiddie Spock scenes beat the kiddie Kirk ones (granted, there are deleted scenes of both). I was actually impressed by Kogan.

DevilEyes This really should have came with stronger warning than "really HOT" as I'm not sure if that really begins to describe it...at all. ;)

Then the youtube links got me to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aps2UHPy2ck which is clips from "Catlow" which also starred one of my favorites- Yul Brynner. It was one of those movies I saw as a teen, and let me tell you I must have only seen an edited for TV version as I certainly didn't remember the whole fight scene with Yul Brynner.

Maybe my problem with Pine as Kirk is that he just looks so darn young to me although he is just a few years younger than I am. Quinto definitely looks younger as Spock than in actual pictures. I thought he was about 25 until I looked him up at IMDB.

After reading the posts by Maxum and Jeri highlighting Pine's acting I'll pay more attention to him the next time I see the movie (at least once more in the theater). Pine as 'in-depth Kirk' might be getting the short-shrift from me as he's usually in a scene with McCoy or Spock and he isn't getting my analysis. ;) I did love him in the scenes with Prime Spock but even then he certainly wasn't getting my full focus.

I always loved Spock more than Kirk, but I think Pine's performance has, for the first time, tipped my favorite character the other way. If you were to ask me what's different about Pine's Kirk, it's the vulnerability he brings to the role. People mention that Kirk is frat boyish or cocky, and that's true to some degree, but there is more hiding underneath that cocky exterior if someone chooses to dig deeper and not take Kirk's bravado at face value. Pike did that with Kirk in the bar, and it had an effect on Kirk. I loved the scene with Kirk and Spock at the cadet hearing. Again, you see those undercurrents of a wounded man beneath the bravado. I don't recall ever seeing that side of James Kirk with Shatner's interpretation. Kirk was always sure of himself, always in control, but with Pine, I see flaws and a softer side of him.
Well Shatner's Kirk didn't lose his daddy. Reboot Kirk is an different character altogether.
I have to say I really think Pine's Kirk is sexier. I adore both actors, and Quinto in RL life gets the edge. But I really didn't like the look they gave him for Spock. And I didn't think he was sexy. Sweet with Uhura in the turbolift, yes. But not sexy to me.

So despite finding Quinto the actor sexier (sorry Chris!), I had to vote for Kirk as the sexier of the two characters in the movie.
Very honest reply to the poll question. I almost went that way. :D I was swayed by the pictures of Quinto and my memories of him in the movie lasting better than those of Pine.
I won't question Pine is prettier, but I find Quinto more memorable.
(And no, in my book, pretty doesn't equal sexy.)

For a threeway poll, vote in this thread :)

Have I mentioned that I love you guys?
Me, too; nothing else would induce me to buy an action figure, after never having done so in 40+ years of Star Trek. It's purely to remember the fun we've had, as much as I like Karl.

I guess that Quinto is prettier, but Pine as Kirk is the more attractive character. He's the sort of boy I'd go out with. Spock isn't cheeky enough.
Excellent choice; impeccable reasoning. ;)

^ ^ Oooh. Thank you. :) I like what Zoë said about him.

Not to repeat the post, but here is the link to the specific article at that news website link Maxum referenced. (It's also in Trek news here, where it can be discussed in the Trek news forum.)

There was chemistry between us, say Star Trek actors
"While their characters Lieutenant Uhura and James T Kirk are part of a rare romantic angle in the sci-fi thriller,"
Um, really??

Sounds like the author of this article did not see the movie. I'm guessing, they watched the trailer, maybe the bar clip that released before the movie, figured that Kirk and Uhura would 'obviously' be an item, and then picked up a few complimentary quotes from Pine and Saldana to 'spice it up'.

Well that's just me. I'm brilliant. :D

I wouldn't doubt the author hadn't seen the movie, but the publicity promotions are playing the triangle. The new movie poster has just the three of them -- Kirk on top, with Uhura and Spock on the lower sides.

This was of some concern to me, since I and probably everyone considered the triad to include McCoy. Uhura was introduced third in the movie, after only Kirk and Spock -- and before McCoy. There is something intended; whether it's romantic, I don't know. But it is definitely a triangle.

Well that's just me. I'm brilliant. :D
Right again!
