Oh, com'on. Sylar is awesome. And surprisingly empathetic at times. And there's a lot more to him than head-cutting (really). Quinto looks like he has a ball playing that role. Sylar has a sick sense of humor, which is a delight (I enjoy dark humor). He also gets some of the best dialog on the show. "It's all behind me now. Like a long night after a bad taco." "Eat your brain? Claire, that's disgusting." LOL.

This video does a good job showing two different acting modes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfTDs44-n5c

Plus, the fact that Quinto has managed to pull off both a role like Sylar and a role like Spock and play them completely differently and to aplomb really does say something about him as an actor. He's really good at character voices and accents, too.

Granted, my history of crushes in the sci-fi/fantasy/supernatural genres have included several repressed, but sensitive individuals with dual natures and a general tall, dark and handsome hunkiness factor (Angel fangirl, here--been one for years). Angel, Wesley and Spike are pure awesomeness. Max and Michael off of Roswell are favorite genre hunks of mine. Spock's right up my alley, really. Vampires are overall my favorite fantasy creature. Vampire/human, ghost/human or alien/human romance is a big theme in my genre viewing. Sylar fits my love of the magnificent bastard (Angelus is another magnificent bastard--always a fun archetype). Han Solo and Indiana Jones are other genre crushes of mine (granted, there's a Harrison-factor there).

I also happen to have Asperger's Syndrome, which means repressed, social skills-deficient and brainy is part of the package. I totally relate to Spock on that level.

I'm rarely into "normal". I like "different" because I naturally perceive myself as "different". Pine's Kirk is a bit too normal/bland for my tastes. I'd definitely pick a Spock over a Kirk any day. Though, in the original show, I actually find McCoy the most attractive, but prefer Spock's character (let's face it, the guy is different and interesting).

I suspected he was a very good actor only by seeing him in the first season of Heroes. He had to be good to pull the Sylar character off.
But I didn't know until seeing him as Spock (ie in another part) that he was that good.

I've just seen the thread's tags

Spock is the typecast-breaking role, I think. Most of his crappy early T.V. roles had him getting a lot of villains, weirdos and gay guys. Though they have been working in a few romantic, emotional or redemptive arcs for Sylar on top of the arch-villainy, which gives Quinto something more to play with. Those big eyebrows make him a shoo-in for villainy and he probably has a tough time getting much else. After that, playing a good-guy hero who gets to be the romantic lead in a huge summer blockbuster is a big deal, I think (even if it's not the most traditionally "normal" lead-hero type). It's definitely against-type for him.

I'm glad they gave Spock the girl instead of Kirk. It's WAY more interesting to go against expectation.

Spock getting Uhura with Kirk not getting the girl is the same way it was better that side-character Han got Leia instead of the male lead, Luke. Then you have infamous examples of the wrong guy getting the girl like Blane instead of Duckie in Pretty in Pink (stupid test audiences--though, it essentially made Duckie the most sympathetic character in the film instead of Andie).

It's expected for Kirk to get women. Giving Spock a relationship is fresh, new and unique. Giving Kirk an emotional arc wouldn't be half as special as dragging emotions out of someone who does his darn best to make people think he doesn't have any. Making inhuman characters the most human of all is one of my favorite storytelling motifs.

yes, this is a huge break for Quinto. no wonder he took it with open arms. aside from being born to play Spock, he's now set for life.

Shoot. I don't have time for the post I want to make (class to go to), but NileQT (if it's not annoying to you), I'd love to talk to you more about Asperger's and how it affects the characters you like, as, well, the autism spectrum is something that affects my family life quite a bit (son about to get his diagnosis, husband recently realizing he's at least (undiagnosed) borderline Apergers, and myself relating to many characteristics), and it's an interesting lens through which to analyze our likes and dislikes.

Chris Pine is a cutie, but how did Kirk get so far ahead in the poll? Have the men been voting here?

I really didn't care for Shatner's Kirk, but the popularity of Pine's Kirk is actually understandable. Still, Spock and I have a 43-year history, and my loyalties aren't going to change.

It's strange to be in the generation where the original Kirk and Spock were my parents' age, and now Kirk and Spock are essentially my children's age.

As far as my Asperger's influencing what I gravitate towards... Love of and rooting for the outsider is probably the biggest part of it when it comes to likes and dislikes of characters. Outsiders are my thing.

And com'on, people! Let's even up this poll!

I think the men came in when women started voting in the Gaila/Uhura poll. I get the vibe that men generally prefer Kirk over Spock, whereas women generally prefer Spock over Kirk.

And com'on. Gaila over Uhura? Blasphemy. Granted, as far as female Trek characters from TOS go, my favorite is Rand for her woven beehive alone. It's just... fascinating.

It's the men, I tell you! I think they came in.

Should I go see if I can grab a few Sarmy people? LOL.

This seems true, but more to TOS Kirk and Spock on the boards I've browsed. Pine's Kirk and Quinto's Spock are on much more even footing it seems. I personally (and I'm a woman), prefer Pine's Kirk to Shatner's Kirk as well as both Spocks.

I think Pine just made the character so dynamic: he's rebellious, funny, confident, takes things as they come at him, but he's not invincible and he knows it. He just doesn't let it stop him from going with his gut. That's sexy to me. ;)

And Ria 75, if you've got anymore screen-caps, please do give us more... can never have too much of those golden eyes... *Fans self* Now, where are my smelling salts...? :p
It will be my pleasure to oblige when a have a moment, but those HD caps are HUGE so they need resizing, after a bit of cropping so that Bill doesn't shrink too much.
(Oops - did I say Shatner shrinks? That rings an upthread bell...)

I'm afraid so. He whould be ahead, but not so far.

If guys are coming here to vote Pine against the sexy powers of intellect and, how can I put it, a certain stillness that allows the eye to linger, over pale eyes, fine features and wild antics, we should definitely go to the other thread vote Uhura over Gaila. I mean take a look at those poll results!

And for the record, I think Bill Shatner had much more charisma, personality and sex appeal than Pine. Come to bed eyes, a wicked smile and... well, an overall very inviting manner. Maybe not the handsomest in everyone's opinion, but sex-y? Oh yes.

It's just shocking to see it that far apart. It's been a 2-3 vote horse race all along and then suddenly Pine pulled ahead.
It was a 2-3 vote margin a few days ago; it's been increasing steadily for Kirk.

There were only two men voted for Kirk that I know of, and before that it was already a 9-vote spread in Kirk's favor at one point yesterday.

The Gaila thread only started this morning.
