Kurtzman lands a deal with CBS

What does that mean? That Into Darkness was bad? That Beyond was bad?

I honestly liked them both. It was a good-natured jab at Paramount, with the implication that Beyond was even more "Star Trek-y" (in my view) than Into Darkness and probably whatever was written in the original Orci script (which some report is at the bare bones for the next Star Trek film).

By "They learned their lesson" I'm actually saying "They are studio executives coming up with terrible excuses, but thankfully the best creative types behind it all know how to sneak good things behind their backs."

My thoughts on Orci have nothing to do with his attitude. Creators have to stay separate from their fans. I just think they need to get their hands out of every cookie jar. They're good when they apply themselves, but their formula is to glomp onto a franchise, put out a good initial effort, and then let the franchise wither once they get bored or a new job offer. They did it to Fringe and other properties.

I'd heard about Orci's meltdown with fans online, and that was definitely a bad move. But I do think people should listen to his interview with John and Ken for Mission Log Podcast. He gives his assessment of the reboots, their thought process, etc and so forth. It's a great interview and humanizes Orci, which I think is a healthy reassessment of a creator for people whose only interaction with creators is through the anonymous, faceless void of the internet.

Orci did a tremendous amount more that was worthwhile for Star Trek than all the folks who diss him ever have or could.

I have no complaints about him, but of course he would have contributed more to Trek than his critics. That doesn't make criticisms invalid, though.
