News Kurtzman: Criticism Is Useful

I wouldn't read all the reactions from the fans, but I wouldn't throw them out with the bath water either.. I mean, your making a show for public consumption, by mostly avid trekkers, so there opinions do have to be heard and understood to a certain point.. I mean, if you go off on your own, and no one likes it.. you get canceled.. So if there is a general consensus like, say, Klingon hair, then listening to that critique is valid, and a change is made.. ( they could leave out the moronic "Shave it for war bs, just say, woops, our bad, we listened..)
But you also have to chart new ground, try interesting things, even if it upsets the fan base by not being like the old stuff.. you never know!
Example:
Ex wife Hated flying, but she never flew before meeting me, so, we took a flight, she loved it! Never know till you try!

When you're making a product that you expect people to pay money for, it is a good idea to pay at least some attention to what they want. This obviously does not mean following each and every harebrained suggestion some rabid fan comes up with, but it is wise to follow the general trends. What was liked, what was not liked etc. It is obvious that changes were made for the season two based on the criticism on the season one, and it is much better for it.

Also, Alex, if you're reading this, make TOS-style colourful uniforms happen for the next season, thank you!

Well I am kind of glad in one regard. Now that he is listening he is mostly likely reading this thread since he said he checks out the boards and who can resist a thread with ones own name in it. So now is the time to pitch my best idea of season 3.

The Discovery is sent to the future by the Red Angels and when they encounter futuristic Borg who are now led by Kirk Prime who is KIrk who was Borgfied when they found hi body buried in "Generations" He overtook the Queen as supreme leader of the Borg and they have to team up to stop a military invasion from the Dominion who are led by a Changlin who has taken the permanent shape of Gul Dukat to avenge their lost from "DS9."

With the Help o Section 31 which Bashir has now joined and works with a clone of Georgiou the Discovery welcome KIrk Prime Borg leader aboard to go search for LaForge who has gone in hidding to rebuild Data into a younger and new looking body including a army of Data's because he knew the Dominion threat was out their. Only by teaming up will they be able to find LaForge so they can use his Data army to really get the upper hand and defeat the Dominion once and all. All also happening after Discovery gets a Borg refit with 40 motonic torpedos and 20 phaser arrays and fighter crafts for some top gun style action in space.

Haven't found a fan idea yet that I would prefer to what we are getting on Discovery. I think what they are giving us so far is good. Here's a scene from The Simpsons Poochie episode that I think about all the time:

Focus Group Guy: How many of you kids would like Itchy & Scratchy to deal with real-life problems, like the ones you face every day?
Kids: [clamoring] Oh, yeah! I would! Great idea! Yeah, that's it!
Focus Group Guy: And who would like to see them do just the opposite -- getting into far-out situations involving robots and magic powers?
Kids: [clamoring] Me! Yeah! Oh, cool! Yeah, that's what I want!
Focus Group Guy: So, you want a realistic, down-to-earth show... that's completely off-the-wall and swarming with magic robots?
Kids: [all agreeing, quieter this time] That's right. Oh yeah, good.
Milhouse: And also, you should win things by watching.

Roger Myers Jr. [turns on the light in the observation booth, making himself visible to the kids]: You kids don't know what you want! That's why you're still kids; 'cause you're stupid!

Or in a nutshell: more fanwank please. You can never have enough fanwank :D

On that note, the kelpiens eventually become the Jem'Hadar. The sphere wanted to save them because it's a long lost artifact of the progenitor species from "The Chase", and knows it's descendants, the Founders, will need them.

:techman::techman::techman: I second this

@Alex Kurtzman,,, I think Discovery is a pretty cool guy. Eh boldily goes to the aleins and doesnt afraid of anything.

It's kinda scary that I can't tell if this is a joke or not...

One general criticism I might have is they seem to have scrapped the religion/science juxtaposition. Pike no longer offers up anything from his religious-type upbringing or refers to himself as "provincial"... eliminating what would've been a potentially interesting contrast to other captains in Trek lore. Be a shame if all the fleshing out we got was that he'll end up messed up in a chair and then in fantasy land, and that happened in TOS. As it stands, he'll just be a generic captain. Even mirror Lorca established that character as a unique one; taking away Pike's religion neuters his personality.

At the very least, he doesn't wade into the comments section on TrekMovie and insult the people who didn't like his work. ;)

Everything except the fighter jet thing. I could see that working on a Trek show though finding a way to not make them not be just vipers or star furries would be key. I guess the runabout or a more mult-purpose shuttlecraft would be the way to go because you don't want Trek to just be cool top gun space battles, yet it wouldn't be bad to have a ship for those kind of battles from time to time as well.

Also if you do bring Data back I wouldn't mind seeing him within a new body. Actually you could explore the character in other ways. Maybe Data is missing most of his old memories so he isn't quite the same person he was or he can feel tactile emotions but still has issues with more complex stuff like love, hate etc.

If I had one constructive feedback for the show, it would be this:

Cut the fucking fanwank.

You got a really nice new show there. FANTASTIC actors, an amazing ensemble, the freedom to tell whatever story you like, and a budget and an IP other showrunners would kill for.

So why the fuck do all these new characters have to take a backseat to make place for Spock, Sarek, Pike, Klingon wars, the Mirror Universe, Section 31 and the fucking Borg???

They were cool THE FIRST time. You never gonna' top a "first time". I thought this season already heard that lesson! It started SO strong with an intriguing mystery that was unconnected to anything we had seen before! And a completely new and interesting lore about Kelpians, Ba'Ul, an exploration of what differentiates this show from others (the shroom drive). And now, all of this is thrown out of the window, only to have fucking Spock fight a section 31 Borg??? Only because all these specific elements proved "most popular" in some random fanfic-contest on the internet?

Nick Meyer said it best. “With all due respect ... fans do not know what they want.”

Yes, I totally agree with this. Heck, I don't usually know what I want. My wife and I watch every episode together, and half the time we have totally opposite opinions.

I prefer the approach of giving us something new about something old when it comes to fan wank. I would love to see Romulans for example but what do you going to do with them that hasn't already been done a great deal already. That's one of the reasons at least with the Picard show I am looking forward to seeing more Romulans. Seeing them as refuges with their home destroyed and I think we are going to see a character part of a religious order are new takes on something old. I think "Discovery" has done this for the most part to mixed results.

Jason

The Romulans are the biggest missed opportunity in Trek, IMO. They haven’t been used really well since TOS. Tons of untapped potential. (No huge shoulder pads or unnecessary forehead makeup, pls.)
