News Kurtzman: Criticism Is Useful

Almost all the Romulans seen in TOS wore helmets. They could have had ridges under there. For all we know the ridges are a cosmetic augmentation to differentiate them from Vulcans or they bred with another species with ridges early in the development of the Romulan society. This isn't that big a deal.

Tal and the Romulan commander were ridgeless in TOS S3 - "The Enterprise Incident" and the Commander and his Romulan Centurian were ALSO ridgeless in TOS S1 - "Balance of Terror". If there's one major thing that TNG totally f*cked up with; it was suddenly giving Romulans Ridges in TNG.

So would, be more like Orville count as useful criticism? Also I think my enjoyment of the show would be greatly improved if DS9 was finally released in HD. I think I could sit back and relax and enjoy the show more having that important Trek issue finally taken care of. Less to worry about when I watch the show.:)

If you want The Orville then watch The Orville. I don't go around saying I think The Orville should be like Discovery. So why should you say Discovery should be like The Orville? Is there not room for both?

Well I agree. I was just joking. I mean I think "Discovery" can make some improvements but I still want it to be it's own thing.

Only difference between a official writer for startrek and a fan fic writer is the former gets a pay packet and their idea on screen.

Usually* (but not always) the quality of the writing coming from professional writers for the show is far superior to that of fan fic writers.

*some fan fic writers SHOULD write professionally and as we all know, some episodes of various Trek series quite frankly sucked.

Still, more often, I'd prefer to read the professional. I've accidentally received self-published (fan fic) from Amazon and the writing and editing level were ghastly. I now look at the publisher before I buy a book.

Just imagine what the outrage to "In the Pale Moonlight" would've been if it were a Discovery episode. I remember how divided fans were over the episode at the time. But I think it would be so much worse now.

"Yesterday's Enterprise" would've been hated as a DSC episode too. "Why is the Enterprise-C so important? How can that one ship avoid a war?! Guinan is a Mary Sue!"

Taking critizisim the right way is like walking thru coals. You need to filter out all the "I decided to just hate this show even before the first second aired"-stuff and actually constructive stuff. And sometimes a story need exactly those things that rub fans the wrong way and exactly for that reason. I hope he´s found the right balance there.

No. Why? That era of Star trek is dead and buried (along with the box office flop that was Star Trek: Nemesis).

And before you respond with - But the new "Picard" show, remember: Patrick Stewart was 100% UNINTERESTED in doing a TNG reboot. They had to pitch him the idea they had for the Picard series and the ONLY reason he took it was that they showed hin, No, it wasn't going to be TNG redux.

Plus if you look at "The Orville"'s ratings, of late they're not great - Read: lower than ENT's ratings when it was cancelled:

You want TNG? You have 178 episodes to look back fondly at.

To be fair, a lot of shows have lower ratings than ENT today. 2005 and 2019 are apples and oranges. More and more people watch TV whenever they want, not when broadcasters tell them to. The Neilson Rating system is outdated and needs to be completely done away with.

I don't watch The Orville but I have a vested interest in it continuing. The fact that it airs while Discovery episodes come up means that those fans are distracted watching their show before they circle around back here. ;)
