Problem is that Christian church went through the age of enlightenment, through the Reformation and became a centralized institution with one head and a more or less generalized interpretation of the Bible. There are so many different christian subreligions, but mostly they all recognize the NT as an update to the OT (and that an 'eye for an eye' has been replaced by 'turn him the other cheek').

It's curious how many millions of people Christians have managed to kill since becoming enlightened.

Well, the last crusade was in the 13th century, so...

And if the Pope indeed officially declared Holy War on other countries and religions, I haven't noticed as of yet.

That's why "we" allow ourselves and everyone else to draw cartoons of God and Jesus, make fun of the Bible, the Pope, etc... without threatening to kill anyone. Yes, there are lunatics, but it's not the official agenda. That's why "we" do not sentence women to death that have cheated on their husband.

So folks cease to be Christians when they become soldiers in service of the state? Must be nice to be able to change hats like that.

Brent was right, although he wasn't referring to religion: religion doesn't shape folks' behaviour, rather it's a tribal cloak they wear (usually from birth) and fashion according to their inclinations. For a man of violence raised as a Christian, Christianity will be found to be eminently compatible with violence. Religion is merely an excuse. Most evolved doctrines are similarly mutable, albeit for the most part less obviously so.

He has the right of freedom of speech that animated tv shows or newspaers don't have.

However he could find better ways to use that freedom instead of being such a fucking shit stirring idiot.

The Nazi's burned books. This dick is on the wrong side of the argument that he thinks he is fighting against.

You follow the same weird way of thinking mostly everyone else does. The point is that nobody ceases to be or becomes anything. And it's just a religion, of course you can switch hats like that. That's the problem with religion and the silly idea that it is something that you cannot escape from, or that you are born into, or whatever.

Not only the Nazis. Burning books has a loooong history, and are quite common. And to compare burning a pile of 200 newly bought Korans with the book burnings from 1933 is dangerously silly.

In 1984, hundreds of copies of the New Testament were ceremonially burnt by Orthodox Jews in Jerusalem.

Salman Rushdie's novel The Satanic Verses provoked angry demonstrations and riots around the world by Islamists, some of whom considered it blasphemous. In the UK there were book burnings and five U.K. bookstores selling the novel were the target of bombings.

In January 2001, the Egyptian Ministry of Culture ordered the burning of some 6,000 books of homoerotic poetry by the well-known 8th Century Persian-Arab poet Abu Nuwas, even though his writings are considered classics of Arab literature.

Some other Christian sects burned Harry Potter books.

And so on.

And it's just a religion, of course you can switch hats like that.

In turn suggesting that religion is meaningless outside its function as tribal identification and intellectual masturbation, which is what I said.

Most who profess to adhere to a particular faith would have a problem with this characteristion, however.

btw, ever noticed how "converts" are the most fundamentalist people of all? No matter to which religion they convert to.

Calling it intellectual masturbation doesn't really hit the point, I think. Fundamentalist religious people have a really weird problem with their own awareness of reality. Prejudice, racism, childish behavior, agressive tendencies, very easy to insult about nothing. It's scary.

The bunny question is a difficult one. I suppose the real reason is that it was content to sit there while someone put a burger on its head. Bunnies like being petted on the top of the head, for inter-bunny social reasons, so perhaps it regards the warm burger as comforting. Bunnies also like to eat cooked meat, though it can mess up their digestive system (they rarely get a chance to eat a cow in the wild), so perhaps the bunny is taking the cheeseburger back home to eat later.

Anyway, regarding the other two poll choices, Obama said, "Let me be clear: As a citizen, and as president, I believe that members of the Dove World Outreach Center have the same right to freedom of speech and religion as anyone else in this country." But Obama has sent the FBI to grill the Reverend Jones three times now, and had the Secretary of Defense harassing him. Is that how much freedom of religion and freedom of speech everyone else in this country has? I shudder to think that maybe it is.

You are free to say anything you want, but only in between government interrogations.

He is an ARTIST.

He might be getting funding from NEA to torch a Koran.

I think that he plans to call his work-of-art, "Piss Christ".

oh wait...........that name is already taken.

As I predicted in this thread last night, preachers are already lined up to burn Korans.

SPRINGFIELD, Tenn. - Springfield Pastor Bob Old said his decision to burn the Islamic holy book on September 11 has nothing to do with the agenda of the pastor in Florida or the controversy surrounding the mosque in New York.

He has his own reasons behind the demonstrations and no intentions of backing down.

"My plans for Saturday are to take a copy of the Quran and burn it," said Old.

He's planning to go forward with the demonstration on 9/11 to be able to make his point and have it heard.

"To the Muslim church I would say the reason I am doing on Saturday because I believe they worship a false god. They have a false text, a false prophet and a false scripture," said Old.

He said the other two reasons are to teach Americans about their constitutional rights and to make them better Christians.

Westboro Baptist Church, the small Topeka, Kan., church that pickets funerals of American soldiers to spread its message that God is punishing the country for being tolerant of homosexuals, has vowed to hold a Quran burning if Gainesville's Dove World Outreach Center calls its off.

CHEYENNE (Wyoming) -- The founder of the Wyoming Tyranny Response Team plans to burn a copy of the Quran on the steps of the State Capitol on Saturday.

Duncan Philp said he will protest the location of a proposed Islamic Center near Ground Zero in New York City. He also will protest President Barack Obama's support for the location.

Looks like Obama will need a bunch more FBI agents to squelch all this speech.

I guess that I don't understand the fear from the Muslim world over this silly controversy...

Everyone knows that Islam is a Religion-of-Peace®.

Why all the cases of the vapors?

So...in order to show that they're not a religion of piece and that us Christians are better are more peaceful...we're going to burn their holy book to protest them building a community center two blocks from Ground Zero? How the shuddering fuck does that work?

Ah. I understand now. I have to be totally and utterly retarded to understand it...but if you hold your breath for 3 minutes and bash yourself in the frontal lobe with a ball-ping hammer it all becomes crystal clear.

In order to be better than them we have to be worse than them.

If Star Wars fan-atics were openly burning Star Trek DVDs, you'd sure find some Treknerds who'd be really willing to murder, probably at about the same ratio.

Fundamentalism is not a religious problem.

Um, I don't think burning a book (which was probably printed by Christians working at some printing house owned by Christians) is quite the same as sawing somebody's head off, blowing up 50 random women shoppers in a market, or flying passenger planes into buildings, or even this

Father Manuel Musallem, head of Gaza's Latin church, told the AP that Muslims have ransacked, burned and looted a school and convent that are part of the Gaza Strip's small Romany Catholic community. He told the AP that crosses were broken, damage was done to a statue of Jesus, and at the Rosary Sister School and nearby convent, prayer books were burned.

Father Musalam additionally told The Jerusalem Post that the Muslim gunmen used rocket-propeled grenades (RPGs) to blow through the doors of the church and school, before burning Bibles and destroying every cross they could get their hands on.

If Pastor Jones uses RPG's to blow off the doors of a Florida mosque, ransacks it, and burns everything he finds inside, then yeah. But that's not what's happening, either by him or in the other churches that are now holding Koran burnings ("Thanks for all the attention, Obama!").

Muslims have to learn that non-Muslims in non-Muslim countries don't have to abide by Muslim law, and won't be forced to through violence and threats of violence. If they want to live in the West then they have to grow up and realize that the West long ago made religious mockery a popular sport. They burn the pope in effigy and spray swastikas in Jewish cemetaries, and we get to burn Korans and denounce Muhammed as a camel thieving pedophile.

If we win, they get the right to do stand-up comedy without fear of being murdered. If they win we're all going back to the 7th century.

Nobody will win. This will never end. The only one able to end this silly culture and religion war would be Mr. Freeman himself. And even then half of the fundamentalists would simply ignore it just so they can continue to hate because that's all they have in their lives.
