Kobayashi Maru

I think (and hope) that KM will read much better sandwiched between TGTMD and the new book. I had mixed feelings about KM - it was a good book, well written, some interesting vignettes. But it never seemed to go anywhere. I simply could not tell you what the book was about, there's no real plot to speak of, just a lot of set up. Hopefully that will pay off in the next book.

The plot was basically, Archer knows that there's something suspicious about the cargo ship attacks and he is trying to convince the Coalition that it may be the Romulans.

Well, I picked up The Good That Men Do this afternoon. It seems to have quite a few good reviews on Amazon and a few other sites. I'm expecting good things.

I thought I was doing my research for well received recent Trek books but I missed this one completely. I guess I haven't been considering Enterprise. Thanks Thrawn!:)

Manisphere The Good That Men do is a great book it's my favorite book of the Enterpise relaunch that's come out so far. Kobyashi Maru isa good novel to follwup where the TGTMD story leaves off too.

I haven't had time to tear through TGtMD so I'm about 150 pages in. I'm really enjoying it. It's pretty much exactly what I want when I pick up these paperbacks. So, one comment so far.

As much as I'm enjoying the story flow, humor and prose of the book, I find it hard to believe that Trip would be the one to contact Section 31 and that Malcolm would want to help him out. I mean once you're in you can't get out and Malcolm had enough trouble with Harris. I find it hard to believe that he'd want his friend to suffer the same never-ending obligation.

And dang, I keep reading such unenthusiastic feedback for KM. It's making me iffy about that one. For that matter I'm hearing iffy feedback about Raptor's Wing as well. Well founded or not.

Really, most of what I've heard about TRW:BTRW seems fairly positive to me. As KM, while it wasn't as good as TGTMD, I still enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone interested in ENT or the Romulan War.

If you enjoy ENT, you'll enjoy KM. It's a great bridge from TGTMD to the first Romulan War book. If nothing else, I would find it worth it because there are references to the Romulan War to things mentioned in KM. I think one of the best written segments in KM deals with the Horizon. (Any more said than that would be a spoiler.) That was worth the price of the book to me.

Whereas I thought that what happens with the Horizon was one of the worst ideas of the Enterprise book series.

I've actually enjoyed all of the Enterprise re-launch books so far. Haven't had a chance to get deep into 'The Romulan War' yet as real life keeps getting in the way.

Vaguely spoilery...

I wanted to see more done with Mayweather's family. TPTB set up a chance for us to explore the civilian side of space exploration and did almost nothing with it. Now, IIRC, the books won't be doing any more with the idea.

I think Kobayashi Maru suffered from the fact that the entire book was building up to a downer, and the reader knew it. I mean how can the event that Starfleet would come to use as the classic "no-win scenario" have a happy ending? Even with the declaration or war, the book felt like it lacked resolution. Like a holding pattern, just meant to fill space until the war started.

I was a fan of Trip's resurrection and mission to Romulan space at first, but by the time KM was done, I was more confused by it than anything else. I hope that plot comes into a little better focus in Beneath The Raptor's Wing.

I didn't like the fact that Enterprise was the ship involved in the KM (though I can see why it would have to be the hero ship)

The fact that there was a solution to the no-win scenario bugged me!

Yeah, there was no hack or tweak he could do to the universe and find a solution a la nuKirk. Either lose his ship or lose the Kobayashi Maru. Mutually exclusive. No-win.

Before T'pol and Reed leaves Enterprise Denak says that the Vulcan ship can get her into Romulan territory but not out. When they return she tells Archer that it was a Vulcan ship that brought them there and back. Could someone tell me how this journey was really performed?
