Kirk's death

indycar

I find it funny that it seems most people (even some fans) aren't even aware that Kirk died permanently in the series. Most people (including nonfans) know about Spock's "death" and most fans know about Data's death, but how come Kirk, the main character in two series and six films, seems to be somewhat forgotten?

Perhaps they never saw Generations. Or like me, they just pretend they didn't see it... multiple times. ;)

Killing Kirk was stupid. Better to have, like with every other OS main character, left his fate open ended. imo

I suppose that would depend on your definition of "most people." Did you take a poll? Did you interview random people on the street? Did you go to a grandma's knitting bulletin board website and ask all their members? Who exactly are these "most people" you're referring to?

Dukhat, how in the name of a Tangled Skien did you get access to my Grandma's Knitting Bulletin Board? Do you know if she is still mad at me? I was supposed to visit her and the Ladies in my new Trek costume she knitted me, but I blew it off to watch "Generations", again...the man can make an Omlette!

indycar, I think I know what you mean, but I want to be sure, because I think you have an interesting point. Can you please clarify? :)

It's just that I've seen Spock and Data (especially the former) appear on lists of main characters dying in their films, but Kirk, who was the main character in the series, hardly gets this "honor". I think what also confuses people is that we know have the reboots where Kirk is alive and well (for the moment). Also, in both of those characters dying, it was a major event for the other characters, where as in Generations, as soon as Kirk dies at the beginning, we are now with the TNG cast and when he really dies, only Picard knows and he doesn't make any further reference to it.

Thanks, and that is what I thought. I agree that his death seemed less "important" to him and the character, compared to the others, but I wonder if it had to do with Shatner's wishes and conditions for doing the movie. I would love to ask him that, along with about a zillion other questions!. Thanks for the clarification. :techman:

Perhaps people just like to pretend it never happened. I know I do.

Me, too...in my mind, he and the others just keep on going on...ha!, sort of like in the Nexus...funny I never made that connection before! :)

Kirk is dead? You can't kill an idea!

But seriously, I just realised he has "died" three times now. Yet he's still alive. No wonder The Knitters are confused.

In TOS, Kirk died three times already: "The Enterprise Incident", "Amok Time" and "Tholian Web". It's just not that big a deal in Star Trek.

But Spock stayed dead over the hiatus between ST2 and ST3, and remained the talk of the town in ST4 still. Nothing much followed the deaths of Kirk or Data - no further movies returning to their respective universes. And Spock is the most iconic character of Star Trek anyway, while captains come and go...

Killing Kirk was stupid. Better to have said:
I think they way that Kirk died in Generations was pretty lamely done. IMO what they should have done wa send Kirk off in a great space battle which would have been a far better ending that what was actually done.

If you'd left his character fate open ended at some point you would have had to conclude his character in some way.

As far as I'm concerned, Kirk was rescued from the Nexxus almost immediately either by the Enterprise-B or by Spock and Scotty working together. Picard met Kirk's echo in the Nexxus, just like he met Guinan's echo.

Yes, I know that this doesn't exactly jibe with what the movie told us about how the Nexxus works, but I don't really care. The screenwriters made things up willy-nilly to suit their purposes of the moment, so I'm just doing the same. :)

My futile argument has always been that, because the linear time of our space-time continuum has no meaning there, anybody who ever entered the Nexus is actually still there.

That makes as much sense as anything else in that movie.

I'd say that all except the stupidest fans are aware that Kirk died in GEN. If it's not discussed as much as Spock's death in TWOK, that's just because there's less to say, other than "It wasn't very good".

It occurred to me the other day that Star Trek VI was the last time we saw Kirk. He gave his final send-off log, ending in "... where no man... where no ONE... has gone before...", and the Enterprise flew off into the sunset.

That's how it happened, and DON'T YOU DARE suggest otherwise! ;)

^ If you watch that last scene carefully, you will see that the Enterprise-A flew straight into the sun and exploded in a big flash. ;)

Another idea would be for Generations to end as follows:

RIKER: I always thought I'd get a shot at this chair one day.

PICARD: You may still, Will. ...Somehow I doubt this will be the last ship to carry the name Enterprise. ... Picard to Farragut. Two to beam up.

(As the turn to leave, a holodeck door suddenly opens behind them, revealing the corridor of the Enterprise-D).

CREMAN: Captain! Thank goodness we finally got in. Lt. Cmdr. Worf's promotion program spawned a runaway process. It took an hour and 50 minutes for us to debug it and open the door.

(Riker and Picard look at each other and smirk)

PICARD: Thank you, crewman. Picard to bridge: best speed to Risa!

[FANFARE AND END CREDITS]

It just occurred to me...

In GEN, Kirk's last words are "Oh my."

Takei stole his catchprase!

Has Takei been mocking Shatner's death scene all this time?

Its because everyone has read The Return :)
