one of the things that makes the classic series bridge so amazing is how actually efficient it is. the captain can, with a modicum of movent, see every display screen and workstation on the bridge, giving him a gread deal of command information. the high back would necessitate him completely turning the chair to see the communication station and parts of the science station. with Kirk's regular chair he only has to turn his head and swivel the chair a slight amount (watch TOS closely and you'll see him do it many times).
