Kirk's black tunic - Theories? Thoughts?

I thought I would start a thread as to why Kirk may be wearing a black tunic that, according to the article, is integral to the plot.

Here is my theory - he as been promoted to the rank of Captain, but does not yet have a command. he may be on the Enterprise to apprentice with Pike but with no authority, just an observer since Starfleet considers him so young. However not to confuse the crew, he cannot wear his departmental tunic that carries his rank, just the black tunic as a representation that he does not belong to any one department, cannot issue orders and is not officially assigned to the ship.

I don't know but I like the black embroidered delta on the chest! I want one!

He got his top ripped off.
People are giving this way too much thought, we saw five stills roughly spanning 5 minutes of movie time.

I think this might be correct, but the reason he's apprenticing in the Command arena might be because of the Kobayashi Maru controversy.

This could be a recurring issue, and he may have to earn the trust of his crew, and of Starfleet, before they allow him to command the Enterprise.

When the Fit hits the Shan, and Captain Pike is unable to command, Kirk takes temporary command.

Rubies Costumes has the contract for costumes related to the new movie.

When they are released, I'll be getting myself a yellow top.

They are pretty cool.

Not really. In one of the interviews Orci says that the reason Kirk is in black cannot be discussed as it represents part of the movie's ongoing story. Additionally if it was 'just ripped off' one would assume he would throw on a new one between the bridge scene and the escape pod photo. Unless...hmmm

Yeah...I gotta think we're just seeing the under tunic here. The Command Yellow is missing or ripped somehow. Although...maybe not...I can't seem to remember any scenes where Shatner's Kirk is not wearing a shirt or that his shirt was ripped. Hmmm.:rolleyes:;)

I think we're seeing elements of an alternate timeline, where Starfleet captains wear black, and the Enterprise bridge is filled with bright lights and glass panels.

He's just finished up training at Section 31, and during the movie's crisis, he's temporarily placed in command of the Enterprise.

This would add an interesting layer of mystery to his character.

He's on probation for screwing with the Kobayashi Maru simulator, and the black tunic is Starfleet's equivalent of a dunce cap. At the end of this movie, when Kirk becomes a big hero (somehow) he'll "get the gold" (tunic).

Yeah there will be a scene after Kirk saves the day, that the head of Starfleet drops the gold tunic on Kirk, similar to this scene...

Followed by an FNN News Conference.

Since there's a Starfleet logo on it, so he's not trying to hide the fact that he's in Starfleet. There's just no rank insignia.

I seriously doubt he was promoted to captain to "apprentice" under Pike, and has to wear the black undertunic to avoid confusion. I mean, huh?

Integral to the plot that he's in black. So the clothing and color matter? So he'll stand out? So he'll not stand out? Because he's pretending to be someone elese? Because he is someone else? The tunic contains something important?
The uniform Kirk is wearing matters that much to the plot? Weird, frankly. And fascinating.

It is the same basic undershirt that all the male characters are wearing.

Exactly. It surprises me that there is so much discussion about it. It looks way cool with the black delta on it, embroidered if I'm not mistaken.

could very well be

maybe the bridge and uniforms we've seen are from the effects in the timeline, and now this is the new timeline
